Infrared is replaced by Bluetooth. The control can be done using an app on a mobile device with Bluetooth. Every smartphone and tablet has Bluetooth on board and LEGO offers its own app for remote control. In addition, there is still a separate Powered Up remote control #88010. What do you think? That being said, I have had a decent success rate with test models fitting and functioning and, as I have had several requests for these wheels, I am offering them here. I do hope they will work for you but, again, I cannot guarantee that. First of all, we want to thank you for sharing the video in your communities. We’ve seen it on your online channels, and it’s been exciting to follow, as well as receiving community reactions and questions. Visible are the Powered Up components on the six-core cables and the new connectors. They are similar to known network connectors, but are LEGO-specific. Unfortunately, you can not connect multiple plugs to one output of the hub. For any new LEGO train fan who is just starting to build and collect LEGO trains I would recommend the latest system. The BBB wheels have a LEGO Technic axle hole in the middle and it's geometry fits perfectly to the LEGO system. If you use a self build Power Functions drive train you can power your engine right throught these train wheels. This concept was used in my models of BR23 and BR80. The 9V train motor #5300/ #10153 has permanently mounted metal wheels through which power is drawn from the 9V rails. Instead of a receiver and the power supply now a "hub" takes over this task. It is as big as the Power Functions battery box, but also contains the electronics with the Bluetooth receiver in addition to the 6 AAA batteries. Though we cannot share all details, we do want to open up test lab door and can share the following: We’ve been through 3-4 different design prototypes of the wheels, and several different combinations of materials, to find the wheel that was the best in efficiency and the best in overall performance. Further, we can share that multiple tests have been conducted for each iteration, and that the duration of each of these tests was a full week.

There is a 9V connection plate on the top to connect train lighting. (Conversely, this connection plate can also be used to supply this motor with power from a Power Functions battery box. Then this 9V railway motor can also run on plastic rails.) The side panels can be removed. The use of 3D printers makes it possible to produce LEGO compatible components in smaller quantities and without the need for complex and very expensive injection molds. The sizes of the Powered Up train motor, the Power Functions train motor and the 9V train motor are identical.As explained in the video, one of the plusses about the new wheel system is that the train wheel holders now have better clutch power on top, and they can connect at the bottom as well via standard tubes. This makes the wheel holders fit a lot better into the standard LEGO building system. Another positive change is that instead of having to fiddle with small metal axles, the new wheels just snap into the train wheel holders. And because the wheels turn independently, they can handle curves better. Not having to use metal axles also reduces cost, and is environmentally friendlier. (Picture below, old wheels on the left, new wheels on the right.) Ben Fleskes from Portland (Oregon, USA) begun 2004 to produce LEGO compatible plastic train wheels. During these days from LEGO only standard wheels were available which didn't work well to build a steam engine. In the video, we explain parts of our testing procedure that we hope gave some interesting insights. Unfortunately, we cannot share detailed information about the scientific tests because it’s company confidential information, but we can assure you that we take tests of trains and train wheels seriously. The intention of the wheel test in the video was purely to have visual content, and we underestimated the signal it might have sent to community members that this is how tests are conveyed.
