About this deal

His mental equilibrium begins to be overturned: he finds he is the No 1 target for the German authorities, becomes more and more paranoid about informers, distrusts his lover and finally decides to flee to the safety of Argentina. Initially Jews are taken out of the cities and sent to small towns in the south so they “can’t interfere with the war.

Anna observes Ippolito and Emanuele having spirited, intense discussions furtively and they also bring Concettina’s suitor Danilo into their fold. As you say, I suspect it’s in a similar league to All Our Yesterdays with its broad scope and focus on family dynamics.E quando esse destino chega, o sentimento opressivo que nos acompanha enovela-se dentro de nós sem dar tréguas. Set against the backdrop of Italy between 1939 to 1944 - the months of anxiety before the country entered the war, through to the tension following the Allied victory - "All Our Yesterdays" follows the lives of two families during the period of great turbulence. The book focuses on two Italian families living opposite one another in a small Northern Italian town, with the story opening in the late 1930s during the run-up to war.

Pressburger doesn’t make us want Braun to succeed exactly, but he expertly ramps up the tension so we simply must find out which deserved outcome lies ahead, as Braun gets closer to escaping Europe and justice and simultaneously learns more about how close they are to catching him. But I guess I’ve homed in on Anna because she features quite heavily in part two where we follow her move to the South and her marriage to Cenzo Rena. The culmination of war brings great relief and joy to the surviving characters, normal life can finally resume but will it ever be the same? While I’ve enjoyed several reissues of Natalia Ginzburg’s work in recent years, All Our Yesterdays feels like the one I’ve been waiting to read – a rich, multilayered evocation of Italian family life spanning the duration of the Second World War. The author is one of my favorite Italian authors and this is the first one of hers I am adding to my favorites bookshelf. To this day I can’t be sure when or how they died – he refused to discuss it, just as he refused to take part in any form of remembrance ceremony. At sixteen she becomes pregnant and her boyfriend Giuma abandons her after giving her the money to have an abortion. Reading this book seventy years after it was written, however, I feel that ‘ nostri’ also includes me – includes my family’s experience of the war. I just want to read all of her books and it’s wonderful that her work is becoming more available once more. The tone of the narrative is often light-hearted and funny that blunts the impact of the darkness at the heart of the novel and there is something unique about the portrayal of her characters, in how they come across as both comic and tragic at the same time.
