About this deal

The sand table is lined and a generous size and depth, though it may be a little on the high side for the smallest toddlers; the smaller water table is also lined, which makes drying it out easier, but we did think the lining was a little on the thin side for continued use by excited young children. Easy to assemble, it took around 30-minutes to complete, and was the perfect size for our mini tester. Encouraging sensory play as well as teaching the basics of STEM learning, it comes with plenty of plumbing pipes and water taps that can be rearranged in a variety of ways. We also loved that the bottom basin can be picked up, so the water contents can be added back into the top to begin a brand new race (and avoid water waste). When your child pours sand – or water – into the red bit at the top, it'll cascade down through little holes to spin the yellow seahorse or 3 spinning wheels on the other side (not visible in our picture).

The durability is second to none, with its stainless steel frame and heavy-duty plastic tray and lid. Special features such as blackboard facilities and colouring table options gained bonus points, too. Our three-year-old tester needed to kneel down to interact with this, but this wouldn’t be necessary for an 18-month-old.All that pouring and moulding and raking helps tune hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills but there's more to it than that: because playing with sand is such a sensory experience, it also supports brain development in ways that other types of play may not. Made from FSC certified sustainably sourced wood, it is a configureable water play system whereby the layout can be changed to optimise space and switch up water flow. It’s designed for those aged 18-months and up, and you can choose from a 58cm or 40cm height, depending on the size of its user, but we’d suggest going bigger for maximum usage. Recommended for two-years plus, our three-year-old was just big enough to pour the water in the top independently – anyone smaller may struggle to use it on their own. We love the compact design of this table, and, thanks to the wheels and handles, our three-year-old tester was able to wheel this out independently (without any sand or water) and set this up in her own designated spot in the garden.

Saying that, this table is pretty small and light, so tipping it up to empty it isn't as difficult as it would be with other bigger, heavier tables. This company has designed educational toys for schools in more than 90 countries for more than 25 years, so it’s safe to say it knows a thing or two about creating fantastic learning resources. Age: 18 months+ | Size: L50cm x W37m x H66cm (with mill)| Material: Plastic | Cover: No | Weight: 1.

For water-only fun, it doesn’t get better than Plum Play’s discovery forest water run and, while it is a costly investment, this is an outdoor educational toy like no other, which promises to adapt and grow with your child. While it’s not neat enough to take for a day down at the beach, it certainly won’t take up much space in your garden. It's split into 2 sections, so 1 can be filled with water if your child prefers, and the sand/water areas are nice and deep (the packaging doesn't specify its capacity but it felt quite generous to us). It also introduces young ones to the notion of cause and effect, problem-solving and allowing them to let their imaginations run wild.

We like that sand and water play can take place simultaneously as the removable trays are very much separate entities, but we did have to rope in extra toys to keep the attention of our three-year-old tester.

Do note, though, that only 1 section has a drainage plug, so if you're opting for water play, make sure you use that 1 because the other only has a 'blocker' designed to stop sand trickling out of the hole. Please remove all packaging attachments, and any other components which are not a part of the toy, before giving this product to a child. It comes with a good set of accessories, including moulds, a spade, bucket and pourer/watering can, but there's really a fairly limited space for sand (the packaging doesn't specify the container capacity but we'd say this table needs the least sand of all the tables in our selection).
