About this deal

How To Make an Espresso It's the big kahuna of our How To guides, and the basis on which to build hundreds of drinks: our Espresso How To! Updated Oct 1, 2023. As a side note, Baratza has also added these kinds of lights to the Vario+ and Vario-W+, but for whatever reason, the LEDs on those grinders are more cold-white than the natural, warmer light ones on the Virtuoso+.

On the Bloom sans paper filters, you need a coarser grind than pour over – as coarse as Chemex, in fact. Finer grinds just clog up the filter’s micro-etched holes. A lot of hand grinders I’ve used with the Bloom just can’t pull it off. The best grinder I’ve ever tested with the Bloom is the Wilfa Uniform, but the Virtuoso+, along with the Vario+ and Vario-W+, are pretty close. The grinder offers a sleek and stylish appearance. A sculpted metal top surrounds the front-mounted dial and digital display, and the plastic bean hopper features a smoke-colored facade. This appliance will look amazing in any home or cafe. We found the design to be a perfect complement to our office kitchen. Build Quality (4.5/5)While both machines are affordable, the Baratza Virtuoso is more expensive. But since the higher price tag comes with a better quality motor, fewer repairs, and better longevity, the Baratza grinder could end up saving you money in the long run . While oxidation begins before you grind the beans, grinding creates more surface area, which releases more oxygen. This means pre-ground will lose some of its flavors and aromas. Over time, you may experience staleness from the grounds. Moisture The Breville grinder has 60 grind settings and the Baratza only offers 40 settings. While Baratza will perform great for manual or drip brewing methods, the Virtuoso grinder isn’t sufficient for making espressos.

A powerful, high torque DC motor effortlessly drives the burrs. This motor turns slowly resulting in cool, quiet operation and permits long grinding duty-cycles. The circuitry is equipped with an automatically resetting thermal cutoff switch. DIGITAL TIMERSince the Virtuoso+ is a multi-purpose grinder, I like to start in the middle, with a 15 setting for a Hario V60 pour over brew. The Virtuoso+ is a great multi-purpose grinder for many styles of brewing from espresso, to drip, to French press MOTOR The Virtuoso+ utilizes a simple and efficient direct drive gear reduction transmission to move power from the DC motor to the rotating cone burr. A thermal overload cutout protects the motor from overheating due to excessive use - remember, these grinders are designed to grind a dose at a time for home use! GRIND ADJUSTMENT

Moisture can play a role and affect the flavor of the grind as well. Moisture in the air can dilute your beans. Pre-ground has increased surface area and can cause more moisture issues for your brew. CO2 Depletion This Breville grinder, also known as Breville BCG820BSSX, is a conical burr grinder that offers solid performance, a wide range of 60 grind settings, LCD display, and portafilter cradle that makes it compatible with espresso machines. To maximize freshness, the Virtuoso+ minimizes the ground coffee left in the grinder. BREWING METHODS The Virtuoso+ is a great multi-purpose grinder for many styles of brewing from espresso, to drip, to French press. Some baristas prefer the reliability of flat burr grinders. These grinders force the beans to stay between the burrs during grinding. This is the best way to achieve a consistent flavor. Unfortunately, flat burr grinders are louder and use more energy. Flat burr grinders provide the best grind but at a price. Yes and no. If you have money to spend and can afford it, it’s a great grinder, and beginners can use it just as well as an experienced coffee hobbyist. However, as a first grinder, it’s on the expensive side. Is the burr the same as the Baratza Encore?

The Virtuoso + carries over the 40 mm hardened steel burrs from the previous model. But we aren’t complaining as the precise, made-in-European burr set is one of the finest in the market.Inside this grinder is a high-torque DC motor coupled with a gear-reduction system that ensures that the conical burrs rotate at a steady speed of 550 RPM. Thanks to this DC motor, the Virtuoso + is able to maintain a compact size and run cooler than its competitors ( 1). It is also one of the quieter burr coffee grinders on sale today. Additional Features: If you occasionally dabble in espresso, the Virtuoso + will suffice for your needs. However, if you are obsessed with fine-tuning your espresso grind and dialling in your espresso machine to pull a perfect shot, then you should look at another model like the Encore ESP. But for most other people, this might be the last grinder they’ll ever need. Winner: Virtuoso Plus. Grind consistency is key to a good cup of coffee, so Virtuoso has to be the winner here. User-friendliness The DC motor means you get the full force of torque from the start. This really helps with grinding speed.

What Other Coffee Grinders Should You Consider?

The interior workings remain the same as the original Virtuoso. The conical M2 burr grinder produces an incredibly consistent grind, with fewer fines ending up in your cup of coffee. Across 40 grind settings, you can get a range from 200-1200 microns, but the Virtuoso can also be manually calibrated ( 1). The Comparison: Baratza Virtuoso Vs Encore The contemporary design fits well in any kitchen, whether you’re a home barista or an avid coffee nerd. Cleaning Grinding is a natural next step for any aficionado. It is the best way to ensure you always have fresh coffee.
