This proposed collection of essays will strive to rectify this scholarship gap. This CFP seeks abstracts that analyze the films that make up the Emmanuelle legacy (see filmography below), with the aim to illustrate the various ways these movies are important, how they impacted both pop and film culture, and to illuminate subtexts and commentaries they impart.

Emmanuelle originated as a pen name for Marayat Rollet-Andriane, a French-Thai actress who wrote a book in 1957 called The Joys of a Woman, which detailed the sexual exploits of a bored housewife. The first Emmanuelle film debuted in 1974 and starred Sylvia Kristel, who became synonymous with the role. The film embraced its X-rating and became a success, with an estimated audience of 300 million. It remains one of France's most successful films. Several sequels followed, with Kristel reprising her role. Unofficial productions, spinoffs, and a video game also emerged, capitalizing on the Emmanuelle craze. This was just a B movie however and so I happily forgave it it's acting/casting sins. There was definitely much mirth and frivolity when Emmanuelle misplaces her mind-reading/control powers and they end up in Howard's hands. With Tom Cruise aspirations, his new gift is a dream come true.. except with side effects. One of my favorite scenes is a dream sequence featuring Howard and Alexis Thorpe well cast as Tiffany, the (dream) girl next door. This is shot in the manner of Tom and Rebecca De Mornay's Risky Business love scene, and totally benefits from a lesser degree of sophistication. Wrong Emmanuelle. I wanted Krista Allen but instead I got, hmmmmmm, I'm not sure who I got. I don't know what her name was but the girl playing Emmanuelle may very well be the worst actress of all time. That's a bold statement. You really have to stink up the screen to win that distinction.
