He cooperates with Deputy Vaine Gurie, because he had been running an errand for a teacher, Mr Nuckles, and is not involved in the massacre. It has moments of genuine horror and pathos, but for the most part it is a lumbering, mannered performance, a vigorous but unimaginative compendium of every cliché you've ever heard about America in general and Texas in particular. You don't feel if you are around that he might be a big celebrity or something and I guess this is the right attribute of great people. But, freed from that fortuitous topicality, it is now possible to see the play as a bracing satire which blends the youthful isolation of JD Salinger's The Catcher In The Rye with the comic grotesquerie of Terry Southern's The Magic Christian. Perhaps she would have total success, but the fact of the matter is that Jack feels the same deep connection to Laurie. Instead, she betrays Vernon and tells the media he’s dangerous with a sensationalistic report, leading him to be taken to jail for a psychiatric assessment. That shit’s an excuse for lazy fuckers who don’t wanna work and like to take prescription pain killers.
