About this deal

This is an upgraded version of the original Nitecore NU25 (hat tip to the thru-hiking community, which has known about this little gem for a long time). In addition to increasing the lumens and the size of the battery, the NU25 UL has a different headband than its predecessor. The Trail Runner Free series is made for running in every aspect. All three headlamps feature Silva Intelligent Light. This means that you get a double light beam technology in your headlamp, with light settings that are perfect for running.A unique combination of a long reach spotlight and a close flood-light, results in less head movement, better control, improved balance, less fatigue and higher speed. The headband has a built-in cord thus the word free is super flexible and has none of the issues of dangling wires like many other head torches.

I’m looking forward to bringing this amazing bit of kit with me on a full night’s session at the upcoming Chester 100 miler in April and if I’m on the Start-line for this year’s Race Across Scotland in September this will be part of my kit for sure. We're working out what we think about Silva's Trail Runner Free 2 Ultra Headtorch, we'll add our comments here in due course. Trail Runner FreeUltra is a comfortable and lightweight headlamp for everyone who loves running. Its features and light beam are optimised for a runner’s needs. Trail Runner Free Ultra comes with a rechargeable Hybrid battery (4.0 Ah) and the Hybrid battery case. In truth, I could easily be recommending the Silva Trail Speed 5X for this category and vice-versa, as in my opinion, both are the best models for trail and ultra-running. But for me, the reason the Trail Runner Free Ultra edges it as the best head torch for ultra-running is purely down to two things - comfort and weight. Team iRunFar has long been a fan of what ZebraLight does for the lighting industry, and the ZebraLight H600d Mk IV 18650 XHP50.2 5000K High CRI Headlamp is another example of why we continue keeping an eye on this company. One thing that ZebraLight has long been known for is having a ton of programmable brightness settings in its lights. Although it’s a bit of a commitment to program your headlamp, meaning we’d recommend setting it up at home with the instructions before you’re in the field, the upside is that you’ll get to know your headlamp intimately and eventually program it on the fly.

We believe 200 lumens are plenty for straightforward trail running on developed trails, and 300 lumens will give you great brightness for more rugged trails. It’s nice to have a setting where a headlamp can produce 500 or more lumens — found in the Fenix HL18R-T Rechargeable Headlamp, the Petzl Iko Core, the Petzl Swift RL, and the Petzl Nao RL in this guide — that allows you to look farther for trail signs, course markers, or to see what’s going bump in the night in the surrounding trees. Best Running Headlamp for Trails — Runners-Up: Fenix HL18R-T Rechargeable Headlamp, Petzl Swift RL, and ZebraLight H600d Mk IV 18650 XHP50.2 5000K High CRI Headlamp The world's most renowned running headlamp has now been tailored for ultra-distance runners. A new edition to the Trail Runner range the Ultra provides individuals heading into the night with ample battery life to cope with the longest of runs. Choose Trail Runner Free Ultra if you want to go for really long sessions with the 4.0Ah long-distance battery. With Free Ultra you also get the Hybrid battery case which can be used with either 3 x AAA batteries or by complementing it with a Hybrid battery (1.25Ah). Features

Our lumen values are measured 30 seconds after switching the lamp on. We measure lumen according to the ANSI FL1 STANDARD. The headband is simple, soft, and comfortable, and the batteries are easy to swap out on the run, making it easy to recommend this headlamp as a daily trail running companion. Just don’t ask us to say its name aloud five times fast. Cooling is essential for how well the headlamp performs. We invented the airflow technology and included an integrated aluminum cooler in the design because we wanted you to have great light regardless of what activity you do, even if you are standing still taking a break. The result is higher quality light from a cooler lamp.
