About this deal

A few years ago the Nokia 8.3’s standard 60Hz rating would have been fine, but with key phones including the Pixel 5, Galaxy S20 FE, Moto G 5G Plus and Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro all featuring the tech it feels like an odd omission. The speed of time-lapse and slow motion video appears to be fixed. We prefer the Google Pixel 4a approach of offering five different speed options to cover various scenarios. Stabilisation can be applied to slow motion videos post capture.

The Sony Xperia 5 II is a new mid-range smartphone that inherits a lot of the core features from the flagship Xperia 1 II model, in a smaller and more affordable form factor. Read our in-depth Sony Xperia 5 II review, complete with full-size sample images and videos, to find out if this new smartphone can satisfy the serious photographer... Review Roundup Asides from the macro lens, all lenses feature autofocus, including face detection AF. As for video, you get 4K up to 30fps and Full HD up to 60fps (plus a new 'Action' mode that uses 60fps). There's also a 2K video resolution option. Shooting modes include Night, Panorama, Slow Motion and Time-Lapse, plus in addition to the default photo mode there is Pro, Portrait, Video and a new Cinema mode. Nokia has maximised the viewing experience with an edge to edge display, save for a slight bezel at the bottom featuring the Nokia logo, while the front camera punctuates the display in the top left.On the flip side, we'd avoid the macro lens altogether. It's extremely difficult to get a good picture with this lens - there are distortions, blur and the resolution is low. It is possible to focus very closely using the standard lens anyway, so that's your best bet for closeup pictures. Resolution for each lens varies. The primary lens is 16MP, the ultra wide is 12MP, the macro lens is 2MP, while the depth sensor is 2MP too. In its own right, the Nokia 8.3 5G is a solid phone - Nokia's most capable yet - and in the right hands it is possible to make decent photos and videos. But if the camera is a key concern, there are better options out there for the same money.

As far as we can tell, the Portrait mode is the same image area as the standard lens - this is not a 2x telephoto lens. The affect of blur is seen live pre capture, which is really handy. The Nokia 8.3 5G is the first phone from HMD Global to support 5G, and the company is making a big deal of this fact, referring to this as the world’s first “global 5G smartphone”. Still, with a fast f/1.9 standard lens, chances are the camera will be in its lower ISO settings most of the time, where best image quality is achieved. Furthermore, if you're in bright light, the Nokia 8.3 5G is highly capable of sharp and crisp images with a pleasant colour rendition. The Nokia 8.3 5G hits a lot of the features Nokia phones are known for: good value, a decent camera, and a clean software experience. If you want to get involved with 5G but want to spend as little money as possible, then this is a phone worth looking at.This comes with two key benefits. First, the phone’s software is untouched, meaning its completely free of bloatware, duplicate apps and UI changes. Second, because it ensures the phone will receive updates to newer versions of Android year-on-year, a key factor most companies struggle to deliver on at this price. The one area best mid-range phones, outside of Pixels, struggle to compete with the best phone is camera tech. This remains the case with the Nokia 8.3 5G, which offers passable, but fairly by the numbers camera performance. The phone comes loaded with a quad-sensor rear camera that combines 64MP wide, 12 MP, ultrawide, MP, macro and 2 MP depth parts. As is the case on most phones at this price, the latter two sensors are fairly useless and don’t have any real impact on image quality if you use the out of the box settings. In the Pro photo mode it is possible to activate a 64MP resolution - this isn't active by default despite the camera being marketed as such. If you ever need extra detail or want to print big, this is the mode to choose. There's plenty going on around the profile of the 8.3 5G. You've got the SIM card slot that doubles up to hold a micro SD card. It's compatible with cards up to 512GB - that's plenty of extra storage over the somewhat modest 64GB internal memory.

Nokia 8.3 5G - idealo

There’s plenty to like about the 8.3 5G’s design and generous screen, but things fall flat in the camera department. Marketed as a quad-cam set-up (although that includes a 2MP depth sensor), it has a 64MP main camera, alongside a 12MP ultra-wide and 2MP macro counterparts. In bright lighting, the main camera’s shots (which we recommend setting to 16MP to save space) are decent, serving up perfectly usable pictures. The detail could be a bit better, however, and we’ve taken consistently better shots with the OnePlus Nord. The ultra-wide lens performs well, with minimal sacrifices made for the wider shot. If you take a lot of landscape or architectural photos, this should be your go-to lens.Night time photography tells a similar story. Though it is possible to take usable snaps in low light, if you have steady hands, motion blur creeps in with even the slightest movement. Noise is also prone to creeping in and generally you won’t get the same quality shot as you would using a Pixel 5. Capture the moments that matter in detail on the Nokia 8.3 5G and add an expert touch to your 4K videos with built-in ZEISS Cinematic effects. Add anamorphic and blue flares to your footage for an epic look. Registered in England and Wales. Company No 01471587. Registered Office: Vodafone House, The Connection, Newbury, Berkshire, RG14 2FN.
