About this deal

The common dandelion grows in temperate regions of the world in areas with moist soils. They are very hardy plants, able to grow in a variety of environments, and are tolerant of crowding, extremes of temperature, and low moisture. [12] As a result of this hardiness, in addition to its ability to rapidly propagate itself, the dandelion has become established over a wide range via human activity, originally being native to Eurasia, but can also be found across the Americas, southern Africa, India, Australia and New Zealand as a result of incidental or deliberate introductions. Each Dandelion flower is a miracle of nature’s engineering and is made up of up to 200 individual ‘ray florets’. It turns to face the sun throughout the day, which can help you tell the time. With their bright petals and fluffy seed head, dandelions make a wonderful addition to sensory play. You could add the flower heads to water play for children to explore or even to your mud kitchen alongside a variety of citrus fruits to make dandelion tea or soup. Adding scissors to this play can encourage the children to develop their scissor control as well as learning to identify a ‘name the parts of a flower’ (e.g. leaves, stem, petals, flower head, seed, roots). You could also add items such as a pestle and mortar, potato mashers and tea strainers to encourage the children to explore different ways the flowers can be changed and the effects that these tools create. A wide range of insects love the Dandelion for its super-abundant nectar (it’s flowers are edible to humans and are said to taste of honey) and if you grow Dandelions in your garden you will be helping bumble and other sorts of bees, butterflies, moths, other insects and birds. Please join our campaign to celebrate and encourage Dandelions to make our gardens a haven for nature.

Carl Linnaeus named the species Leontodon taraxacum in 1753. The current genus name Taraxacum derives possibly from the Arabic Tharakhchakon, [14] or from the Greek Tarraxos. [20] The specific name officinalis refers to its value as a medicinal herb, and is derived from the word opificina, later officina, meaning a workshop or pharmacy. [65] Research [ edit ]Furthermore, the dandelion produces its seeds by apomixes – without the need for pollination – so every seed is genetically identical to the parent plant and reproduction is generous. Propagation would present no barriers, so, once the researchers had developed the ideal cultivar, the nature of the plant would take over. a b c "What is AKEPIC? | Alaska Natural Heritage Program" (PDF). In October 2013, working with plant specialist bodies and tyre giant Continental, the Fraunhofer Institute for Molecular Biology and Applied Ecology, a huge research organisation with nearly 70 centres in Germany, launched a five-year programme to investigate whether latex derived from the dandelion might have a commercial application. It was found that Taraxacum kok-saghyz, a variety found in Russia, offered the best high-yield roots.

Glyphosate is a non-selective weedkiller applied to the foliage, where it is translocated throughout the weed. Tougher formulations are worth trying (e.g. Roundup Ultra or Rootblast Super Strength TotalWeedkiller)

And through my encounter with the dandelion I feel more intimate with its wispy nature. Perhaps through poetry I could come to know nature better. Now, I wonder if it’s possible to screen-print a cloud? Cultures worldwide tell stories about the dandelion and have culinary and medicinal uses for it. A Native American folktale tells the story of a golden haired girl who attracted the fancy of the South Wind. The South Wind was too lazy to pursue her, until one day he realized she had grown old and her hair had turned white. Supposedly, when the South Wind sighs over the loss of his chance to pursue the golden-haired girl, his breath sends the white-haired dandelion seeds scattering to propagate more golden-haired daughters. Geoffery Grigson, The Englishman’s Flora Since asexually-reproducing dandelions produce genetically identical offspring, they are often useful as subjects for scientific research. For example, dandelions are used in studies where genetic differences between subjects need to be minimized. [66] Education [ edit ]

Powerful, memorable and accessible, the book also boasts a very positive depiction of a character with Asperger's Syndrome which reminds us that the autistic spectrum is indeed just that - a spectrum - and those on it may share similar characteristics but should not be pigeon-holed. A children's amusement in which the number of puffs needed to blow the filamentous achenes from a dandelion is supposed to tell the time.(Bet you weren't planning to read the phrase filamentous achenes today.) Dandelion thrives in conditions of elevated carbon dioxide, growing to a higher biomass and producing a larger number of viable seeds. Therefore, it is anticipated that dandelion will become more competitive and widespread as atmospheric carbon dioxide levels increase. [28] Uses [ edit ] Dandelion greens, raw Nutritional value per 100g (3.5oz) While not in bloom, this species is sometimes confused with others, such as Chondrilla juncea, that have similar basal rosettes of foliage. [55] Another plant, sometimes referred to as fall dandelion, is very similar to dandelion, but produces "yellow fields" later. Its blooms resemble some of the species of Sonchus, but are larger. [56]It is considered a noxious weed in some jurisdictions, [46] and is considered to be a nuisance in residential and recreational lawns in North America. [47] It is also an important weed in agriculture and causes significant economic damage because of its infestation in many crops worldwide. [46] Vít Bojňanský; Agáta Fargašová (2007).
