About this deal

Digitally there are no compression issues, and the original source is clean and bright, with a light filmic grain that give life to the image which is simply wonderful. Thomas had recently produced an adaptation of Paul’s novel The Sheltering Sky, but he still allowed Cronenberg to treat these characters as harshly as the plot required. And like all the best adaptations, he paid only scant regard to the book, but instead took ideas and themes, and then interwove them with Burroughs’ biography, and created a dystopian nightmare that is at once fascinating and inscrutable, horrific and obtuse, arthouse and schlock, as only ever he could. Winner of Best Picture, Best Direction, and Best Screenplay at the 1992 Genie Awards and featuring an astonishing score by Howard Shore (Videodrome), Naked Lunch is provocative, transgressive, and surreal – a feast for the senses, where nothing is true and everything is permitted.

Cronenberg and Weller are recorded separately, but Criterion did a nice job of blending their comments to be scene specific. Burroughs by Allen Ginsberg - these photographs, from the collection of poet Allen Ginsberg, show author William S. Extras like a conversation with Peter Weller or Tony Rayns talking about Burroughs are appetising enough, particularly when you consider how rarely Weller grants interviews these days.Burroughs reading from his novel Naked Lunch; documentary film by Chris Rodley; audio commentary with director David Cronenberg and actor Peter Weller; and more.

Some of the often fascinating supplements Arrow has aggregated for this release either overtly mention or allude to the fact that William S. As the situation escalates to a possible murder charge, Lee decides to lay low in a distant North African city known as Interzone. We reviewed the Region free UK Ultra HD Blu-ray release of Naked Lunch on a Panasonic TX-65HZ1000B Ultra HD 4K TV with a Panasonic DP-UB450 Dolby Vision HDR10+ 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player. Their only comment was to tell me their favourite quote from the book, which, when I checked, turned out to be on the first page. This strand of the narrative is perhaps the most indicative of how the context and insight provided by Arrow’s new edition of Naked Lunch is so crucial to getting the most out of a movie that could otherwise seem potentially dangerous (even, difficult though it is to admit for the dedicatedly woke, invigoratingly so). Certain items can take longer to source than the estimated week, particularly during busy trading periods and may take longer to arrive at our warehouse. It’s a cold film, even by Cronenberg’s standards, and its length – nearly two hours, very unusual for this director – can drag a little.

Lee moves from being a timid insect exterminator to the man who wrote Naked Lunch – even the name “Bill Lee” is a pseudonym Burroughs used for his earliest work – and for the first time in biopic history, there is no sense of catharsis or achievement about this. Walas also created the titular Gremlins of Joe Dante’s film, and his creations for Naked Lunch are caught somewhere between these two stools. One of the great things about Arrow Video’s Blu-Ray special edition of David Cronenberg’s Naked Lunch is that the package does the same thing as the film: it uses cutting-edge technology to immerse you in the stranger corners of a now-lost era.Naked Lunch is provocative, transgressive, and surreal – a feast for the senses, where nothing is true and everything is permitted. Burroughs, actors Judy Davis (Joan Frost/Joan Lee) and Peter Weller (Bill Lee), producer Jeremy Thomas, and special effects supervisor Jim Isaac, amongst others. This intrigue needs to be massaged, like yellow powder into a beetle bum, until it grows like a mugwump’s cranial appendage. In the dual role of William Lee’s strung-out wife and her Interzone doppelgänger, Davis is fantastic, if a little underused. Booklet - illustrated booklet featuring reprinted pieces by films critic Janet Maslin, director Chris Rodley, critic and novelist Gary Indiana, and William S.
