About this deal

Except sometimes discovering the truth can cost you everything you hold dear – your family, your sanity and even your life. Really enjoyed this book and finished it in a day. I haven’t felt that way about a book for a long time. Thank you.”

Loved this book and actually read it in one sitting. Kept me guessing until nearly the end, which was tantalising in itself. Now wondering where this author will go next. Will definitely look out for anything else she writes. Hope she continues in an upwardly trajectory.” Apparently I am in the minority here in thinking this book is dreadful! The writing was clunky and ridden with clichés, the characters were unlikeable and the 'twist' at the end was so obvious I was surprised and disappointed that it wasn't a red herring.I have, at the time of writing, read three Claire Douglas books and would particularly recommend The Couple at No 9 and The Girls Who Disappeared. But before they can begin to heal their fragile marriage, Libby makes some disturbing discoveries about the house. And soon the peace and isolation begin to feel threatening. How alone are they? Why does she feel watched?

Forensics indicate the bodies have been buried at least thirty years, which leads the police to question the cottage’s former owner – Saffy’s grandmother, Rose. When I saw this was sold as 'for fans of The Girl on the Train' on the cover, I was dubious. Numerous thrillers have lured me in with similarly dressed promotions, only for me to discover that either the statement is completely false, or the book is nothing more than a sub-par imitation. Imagine my surprise, when this book turns out to be deserving of its accolade! When pregnant Saffron Cutler moves into 9 Skelton Place with boyfriend Tom and sets about renovations, the last thing she expects is builders uncovering a body. Two bodies, in fact. Francesca (or ‘Frankie’ as she was known as a teenager) receives a call from Daniel, the brother of her childhood friend, Sophie. In 1997, Sophie went missing – all that was found was one of her trainers, left on the old pier where Frankie and her friends often went to spend time. Now, a body has been found which is believed to be Sophie’s, and Daniel asks Frankie to return home and help him find out what really happened all those years ago. Was Sophie’s disappearance a tragic accident, or was it murder? I just loved the seaside town setting here. Having lived in one myself, I know that cold and empty feeling they have out of season, when all the tourists have gone home and half the town shops close until next summer. Claire Douglas takes this and adds in a whole load of suspects who would want to hurt Sophie and a narrator with a few psychological problems of her own, to send our brains spinning into overdrive trying to work out what happened all those years ago. I found I didn't want to get too attached to any of the characters as I really didn't know who to trust! I found it very easy to visualise the area and the people that Claire was writing about and for that reason I think it would make a brilliant tv drama, it's just the sort of plot that keeps you gripped and on the edge of your seat so I think it would translate well to the small screen.

Abi has moved to Bath to try & make a fresh start in life after the devastating death of her identical twin sister Lucy. She meets the very colourful Beatrice (who reminds her so much of Lucy) & her twin brother Ben and this is where things start to get really interesting. I enjoyed this psychological thriller. The Sisters had an interesting mix of characters with various secrets and dark sides to them. This story kept me guessing throughout and eager to find out how it was going to end. Twenty years ago: One rainy night, Olivia Rutherford is driving three friends home when a figure in the road causes her to swerve and crash. Regaining consciousness, she finds herself alone in the car – her friends have vanished. The writing leaves the reader to guess much of how the story unfolds; I felt this mystery element was suitable for the tone of the story. I certainly didn't see several aspects of the book coming. The ending is rather abrupt, as per some reviewers noting, but I felt this was perhaps a suggestion that there was more to come from Abi. I would certainly read a sequel. The narrative style is perfect for this type of tale – creeping up on you, bright sunshine and seemingly happy people but underneath it all a distinctly menacing feel – Claire Douglas builds the tension absolutely superbly, changing the game with almost every other chapter and keeping you firmly off kilter.
