About this deal

Alongside the NEX-6, Sony introduced the E PZ 16-50mm F3.5-5.6 OSS power zoom lens. The retractable zoom design collapses to just under 30mm when powered off, making it one of the smallest kit lenses on the market - and the most compact E-mount optic available outside of Sony's E 16mm F2.8 Pancake lens. Impressively, this new lens is only slightly deeper than Panasonic's PZ 14-42mm F3.5-5.6 OIS power zoom, while offering a usefully-wider field of view at the wide end (24mm versus 28mm equiv.) although settling for a bit less reach at the tele end (75mm versus 84mm equiv.). There are 9 ISO settings available on the Sony NEX-6. Here are some 100% crops which show the noise levels for each ISO setting: JPEG

JPEGs are processed effectively enough to elevate them over the standard of Raw files, although not so harshly that artefacts appear. Typically they receive a slight contrast boost over Raw files, and noise is also effectively removed, but the combination of noise reduction and sharpening can leave images with a watercolour-like effect. Below are our standardised ISO test shots, starting with the Sony NEX-6”s lowest standard setting of ISO 100 and rising incrementally to the top setting of ISO 25,600. Another manual focus-related feature found on the NEX-6 (and several of its peers) is focus peaking. This puts a an outline around the areas in the frame that are in focus. You can adjust both how strong the peaking effect is, and the color of the outline. Continuous ShootingAs for quality, it's excellent in most respects. At 60p, videos are smooth and detailed. Motion is captured well, and there's very little moiré or artifacting (although footage is not completely free of these issues, as you can see in one of the videos below). In poor light, noise is kept under control, though the camera struggles to focus at times, leading to 'hunting' in low-light footage. Not unexpectedly, the autofocus illuminator does not operate during movie recording, only beforehand, for initial AF acquisition when you're composing the scene. Picture Effect+ provides enhanced versions of some existing Picture Effects filters with additional controls. For example, the Toy Camera+ effect is similar to the existing Toy Camera effect but provides the choice of three vignette effects. Miniature+ expands on the existing Miniature effect, letting you combine it with either Toy Camera or Retro Photo effect. The Picture Effect+ app also adds the watercolour and illustration effects shown below.

Once you're connected to a network, you'll be presented with a screen that should resemble what's shown above. The top three items in this screenshot are applications we've installed, while on the bottom you'll see the app store link, instructions, and an app management tool. To test the NEX-6 I fitted it with a freshly formatted 16GB Sandisk Extreme Pro UHS-1 SD card. In continuous shooting mode with the quality set to fine JPEGs, the NEX-6 continued to shoot for over 100 frames and probably would have continued until the card filled, had I not stopped shooting. The first ten frames were shot at a rate of just under 3.5fps and the average for the hundred frames was just over 3fps. One other advantage of an Electronic viewfinder over an optical one is that it gives an indication of how your shot will look with the currently selected settings, so you can see if your exposure or white balance is off and preview effects. If you prefer a ‘straight’ view’ you can turn this off. The default view when recording movies is cropped, leaving large margins around the area being filmed. Exposure data as well as a timer are displayed. The NEX-6 is the first NEX model to feature a dedicated mode dial. In addition to the PASM modes there are positions for the two fully auto modes – Intelligent Auto and Superior Auto – as well as SCN for scene modes and a dedicated slot for Sony’s Sweep Panorama feature.

To get rid of the margins and take advantage of the NEX's 16:9 LCD, switch the 'Wide Image' option to 'Full Screen'.
