About this deal

Cut out a square of 7.5 inch by 7.5 inch for a 8×8 inch shadow box, then use an x-acto knife, utility knife, or true control knife to cut thin strips of the right length. (I go through this in the step by step directions below and the YouTube video!). Upload the SVG files you need to Cricut Design Space and add them to your Canvas. I'll start by customizing the shadow box design. I recommend cutting the frame layers separately. Slim, lightweight, and incredibly portable, theCricut BrightPad Go illuminates hard-to-see cut lines for faster, more accurate weeding of vinyl and heat-transfer projects - without being tethered to a wall outlet!See every detail wherever you may be thanks to 1.5+ hours of cordless, rechargeable power. The lights from my materials list are long enough to wrap around the inside of the shadow box three times. The more lights you attach, the better you can see the layers, so attach another row of lights directly below your first one. You will have to angle the strip down a bit at the beginning, but you can straighten it out after that. After adding either type of lights, take your assembled design layers and place them on top of the shelves inside the frame to make sure they fit well and look even. Then, place a medium glue dot in the center of each shelf piece and carefully press down on the assembled layers to adhere them to the shelves.

Got more questions? I’d love to help! Leave a reply here or ask over on my Cricut Crafters & Makers group! Also note that while these devices are conventionally dubbed ‘lightboxes’, they're not actually so big and chunky. Most are thin and sleek, and not so box-like, so you'll also see them referred to as ‘light tables’, or even more accurately as ‘light pads’ since they’re quite similar in size and shape to a notepad, or even an iPad. What is the best lightbox? Featuring a super-thin 6mm frame, this model comes in three different sizes (A2, A3, and A4) and has a 4,500 lux capacity, guaranteeing excellent brightness for a myriad of projects. A device with ~1,500-3,000 lux (light intensity) is a good standard for most crafts, especially if you’re leaning toward more technical, intricate work. Power supply The Daylight Company Wafer 3 is the best lightbox for sketching large projects, its A2 size is rare on this list and it doesn't skimp on brightness or features either. As the name suggests, the Daylight Company specialises in lights that offer a 6,000 kelvin temperature, which is a cool white colour but importantly offers true colour matching. This wonderful home decor project is a special option for a wedding gift or unique birthday present! Just follow my paper cut light box tutorial video to change the focal point or image. It will be a great gift with your own unique feel! Different light sources (optional) – I’ll show you how to use LED strip lights or fairy lights. My LED strip needed three (3) AA batteries Let’s start with the really simple shadow box design so you understand the basics. From the template, you’ll need the top three frames and one solid square. You can hide the rest of the template for now. Cricut graciously gifted me with both the BrightPad and the BrightPad Go in advance so I could review them for you (thanks, Cricut!)

You can design shadow boxes in many different ways—I usually design them in Illustrator, and I know others who design them in Inkscape. But both of those programs have a learning curve, so today I’m going to show you how to make them more simply in Cricut Design Space. You can simply use shapes or upload our own images, but what works REALLY well is to use Cricut Access. If you’re not familiar with Cricut Access, this is a subscription program from Cricut that allows you access to over 100,000 images—you can search and use the images in Cricut Design Space, which makes it perfect for designing shadow boxes. You can find pretty much everything you need to design shadow boxes in Cricut Access. I have a Cricut Access subscription and I’ll be using it to create the shadow boxes in this tutorial. I highly recommend it! (Tip: If you just got your Cricut, you get a free month of Cricut Access — this is a great time to experiment with it!) The Wafer 3 differs from other lightboxes by offering a dimmer switch with a memory function, so rather than specific settings you can adjust the brightness to your liking and project's needs. This means the Wafer 3 is a little more adaptable than some lightboxes if you're doing more than just sketching, and can include embossing and stencilling. Repeat for each layer until you have all layers on top of each other. Turn the paper cut light box over and glue on a piece of regular copy paper that is 7.5 x 7.5 big. Insert into shadow box leaving the glass panel (this helps to prevent dust from getting in between the layers).

This product offers an immense range of brightness (5,000 – 14,000 lux) across a 10 x 12 inch (~25 x ~30cm) surface. It’s highly compatible with drawing styles that require detail, such as storyboarding, children’s book illustration, fashion illustration, fashion design, and more. NOTE: New images are added as well as deleted from Cricut Design Space all the time, so this exact image may not be available. Feel free to use something similar.

Technically, yes, but we wouldn't. There are apps that simulate the bright light of a lightbox and for some the size of an iPad Pro or larger iPad is good enough to use to trace and see through material. However, lightboxes and the Cricut Brightpad feature scratch resistant surfaces while iPad doesn't – if you're using weeding tools on an iPad screen it will get damaged. What can I use a lightbox or Brightpad alternative for? Users really rate the quality of light, which even on the lowest setting is clear and bright. The device itself is well structured and sturdy, so it's perfect to travel with and you won’t have to worry too much about bumping it. Cricut Brightpad alternatives: frequent questions Can I turn my iPad into a lightbox?A lightbox is quite a simple device. It's basically a square or rectangular container that has a glass or plexiglass surface with a light shining beneath it. You switch it on, place an image you want to copy onto the glass, and then place your paper or fabric on top. The light should shine through your paper, enabling you to see the image below clearly enough to trace it. The HSK A2 Artist Tracing Light Box is a good option for artists as it offers a large and bright workspace, in fact this is size accurate so you're guaranteed the workspace is A3 (some lightboxes for drawing claim A2 but take into account the whole product). Continue attaching glue dots evenly around the inside edge -- about two to three inches apart -- and pressing the wire sections on top. Once your entire strand of fairy lights is attached, it should cover the entire perimeter of the frame, with some overlap at the end. I bought the original one for my daughter years ago, before I was really into vinyl crafting. She ADORED it, and used it to trace a lot of things. I “borrowed” it from her when I began learning to weed vinyl … and that’s where I found it most useful. It helps me see the cut lines on some (though not all) vinyl. It works best for mid-to-dark toned vinyls. It still doesn’t help with glitter vinyl, but I’m not sure there’s much hope for that other than to use the baby powder method!

You can cut a custom shadow box with a good craft knife, but it’s tedious and it requires you having some drawing skill. So instead, I’m going to show you how to design and cut a custom shadow box design with a Cricut cutting machine. And to do that, we need to use Cricut Design Space, where we’ll design our custom shadow box together, step by step.Basically, the Cricut BrightPad shows the cut lines better – that means less eye strain. And I’ll take that any day. The Cricut BrightPad Go has five brightness settings and goes all the way up to 4200 lumens! (Note that this is a bit brighter than the old Cricut BrightPad, which went up to 4000 lumens. The Cricut BrightPad (corded) has three brightness settings and goes up to 3800 lumens. Look for images that are mostly solid with some areas of cutouts for interest. Silhouettes that are all one piece work great and are easy to drop in to your light box layers. And since we want to add a shape to our layer instead of cut it out of a solid section, there must be a solid outline around the edge to keep the details together. The Artography light pad is a popular option due to its excellent illumination and is especially sought-after by sketchers and illustrators.
