About this deal

Hosted by author Lucy Clayton together with a selection of special guests from designers, artists, experts, writers, activists and of course, the dresser uppers themselves. This show explores the way we dress, in all its creative, sequinned, and chaotic glory. It’s about ordinary people in extraordinary outfits. Not on stage or screen but in real life; weaving together sartorial and social history to tell powerful, surprising stories of identity. Gianni Versace masterminded two of her most famous tank dresses. The late designer was responsible for a pristine white style – adorned with gold square details on the straps – that she wore to a concert in 1995. Days earlier, Diana wore a similarly flattering LBD to the London premiere of Apollo 13.

From plague masks to plastic tiaras, kitchen table to couture salon, ballroom to battlefield, our listeners are transported to moments in time where the clothes tell the story. Did you know that Drag played an important role in Prisoner of War camps? Who wore what to “The Party of the Century”? What possessed that guy to dress as a budget Viking when he stormed the Capitol? And why are lots of people deciding to live as mermaids in 2021? Over the years, we've lost count of how many iconic photos we've seen of Diana at fancy royal engagements and owning the red carpet - so much that we almost overlooked her epic off-duty style. And, while her casual wardrobe is gloriously nostalgic, we'd like to pay particular attention to her warm-weather aesthetic.

With the invention of social media and camera phones a good 30 years off, no one ever managed to get a photo of it. But it’s pleasing to think that for one night, Diana and her friends got to experience a wild night of anonymity, joining the masses moving together on the dancefloor - something that’s equally poignant now, as we’ve all had this taken away from us in 2020. One of the many reasons Princess Diana will forever be cemented as a royal favorite is thanks to her reputation as a total fashion icon in the '80s and '90s . A princess of the people, she certainly knew how to appeal to the masses when it came to her 'fits—and has even inspired future generations to embrace a similar style. Considering the fact that social media, fashion blogs, and texting didn't exist yet, this influence was seriously impressive. Sure, she had royalty and fame on her side, but it doesn't detract from the fact that Diana wore so oo many epic looks in her lifetime. Like this article? The answer: by making her a “rather eccentrically dressed gay male model.”Rocos added in her book: “When we walked in...we felt she was obviously Princess Diana and would be discovered at any minute. But people just seemed to blank her. She sort of disappeared. But she loved it. Whether the writer Peter Morgan chooses to grant their wishes for series five, it still remains one of the greatest pop culture stories of the 80s. Has its veracity been confirmed? No, not exactly. Do we want it to be true? Absolutely.

You may know her from DC comics, you may know her from the classic TV show where she flew an invisible jet to save on production costs, and you may even know her from Batman Vs Superman... but one thing is for sure, you've never experienced anything quite like BEING her. And look out for our bonus episodes "Dressing Up With..." where we showcase an individual's unique perspective on fashioning their sense of self. In a world where it’s “pictures or it didn’t happen” this is one event where it’s best remembered as an excellent - if still unconfirmed - anecdote.
