A divorced dad at Paige's school piques Sarah's interest, while Justin slowly but surely finds the key to his learning challenges. After Robert decides to leave office after his term ends, Kevin becomes unemployed and takes some time to decide what he wants to do with his life. He discover that when Kevin was a teenager and struggling to accept he was gay, he started a fight with a boy, Aaron, who tried to kiss him, resulting in him falling off a platform at Ojai. Although William and Nora told Kevin that Aaron was fine, it is revealed in 'Time After Time' that Aaron is in fact paralyzed, and William and Nora have been paying his family ever since. This creates a massive strain in Kevin's relationship with his mother, although they begin to re-bond on his birthday. Kevin and Scotty also discover their surrogate is pregnant. The roles of Sarah and Joe's children, Paige and Cooper Whedon (originally named Paige and Teddy Traylor), were initially portrayed by Gage Golightly and Jimmy Pinchak. Their son also had autism in the original pilot. However, the roles were ultimately recast and the autism storyline was dropped.

Tommy and Holly throw a party for family and friends in honor of the opening of their winery. Joe decides to come with Sarah and everyone's giving him the cold shoulder. Kitty mixes wine with some pills from Kevin's bag that she mistook for aspirin and inadvertently tells Kevin that she proposed to Robert. Kevin gets drunk later and lets it slip in front of the entire family. Sarah learns about the agreement between Joe and Justin and gets even angrier. Nora decides to give Mark another chance and takes him with her to the party but he blows it by kissing Holly. Nora and Holly have a fight that results in ways they had not expected. Like the current Kevin character, the Bryan version of the character was also gay, but had been married, and was going through a divorce. The Bryan incarnation of the character also had a child, and he and his ex-wife were going through a custody battle. Bryan's child later reappeared during the first season as the show, where he was recast as "Gabe," Joe's child from his first marriage. Although Nora is devastated by the death of her husband and the secrets he harbored, she reveals that she knew he was having an affair but she chose to ignore it. She is deeply hurt by the depth of his relationship with Holly upon discovering he bought her a house. Nora embarks on a short romance with her contractor; however, this ends when she realizes she is not ready to date. The season average for the show was once again down from the previous season, averaging 9.48 million viewers. Kitty puts herself in an awkward position when she asks Senator Robert McCallister (special guest star Rob Lowe) for a favor in return for a non-confrontational interview over his personal life. The family gathers at the hospital after finding out that Justin has attempted suicide by drug overdose. Sarah, Tommy and Kevin take a road trip to Nevada to find their father’s vast and lucrative land. Julia and Tommy announce to the family that she's pregnant.

Sarah is depressed after Ojai closes. She sits on her couch for three days eating pizza. Nora has her go on the campaign bus with her and Kitty. Throughout it, Sarah drinks wine and watches soap operas. Later, Sarah gets a call from Holly and they sit down and discover the water main at Narrow Lake, which she, Nora, and Holly have ownership of. Ojai will now be a water company. In the final crash scene, Sarah is shown to be okay and calls 911.
