About this deal

Scrim is a glass fibre (previously burlap) open-mesh tape used to cover joints in plasterboard/ wall board prior to plastering. There are distinct features in construction and shape to each of these types of nets making them identifyable upon close examination of photos. The most common effects that scrim is used for is the 'reveal effect', in which an actor or scene is made to appear or disappear by using the scrim and appropriate lighting. A scrim or gauze is often a very light textile made from cotton, or sometimes flax or other materials.

However, that number is imprecise because the document does not list in detail any other sort of nets being provided during this period, and appears to classify all types of helmet netting provided by the British as “shrimp nets”. Shown here over MTP, but works equally well over plain or sprayed helmets and other camouflage patterns. A scrim will appear entirely opaque if everything behind it is unlit and the scrim itself is grazed by light from the sides or from above. A scrim will appear nearly transparent if a scene behind it is lit, but there is no light on the scrim. In carpentry, scrim is a very heavy, coarsely-woven fabric (similar to hessian or to coarse canvas) which is stretched over interior boards to provide support for wallpaper and to add an extra rigidity. Rapidly remove at any time within seconds thanks to design simplicity, or use included zip ties for a more permanent installation. It has always been an Airborne thing and I've not till recently seen any other units do it, so why has it suddenly changed? The shrimp net is seen in a number of units within the armies in the ETO beginning in the fall of 1944, and becomes more common in photographs from the late Winter and Spring of 1945.Therefore, if we assume theater produced “Shrimp Nets” are a separate line item, it means that there are 4,025,200 maximum possible helmet nets in theatre. Other common effects include sharp silhouettes, backlit from behind the scrim, or other shadow effects (shrinking and growing a shadow). and I know every helmet came with a 'net' yrs ago - but in recent times it has only been Airborne Forces that have scrimmed them up. It was the screen running around the top of the stadium during the opening ceremonies on which all kinds of scenes were projected. A green scrim over the desert camouflage cover reduces the visibility of a helmet under bright moonlight. This style of net is seldom seen among reenactors although up to 60% of all nets in theatre were of a “shrimp net” type or style (or at the very least, 17. However, in early 1944 it was realized that this would be impossible because the British lacked the industrial capacity to meet the Army’s need.

This system provides a more substantial mounting interface and simplifies the process of installing shock cord. One of the keys to understanding the story of the Shrimp Net is understanding the “Camouflage Factories” that produced a large number of them.
