About this deal

DulcoEase capsules contain the active ingredient docusate sodium, which is a type of medicine called a laxative. Docusate does not usually upset your stomach. You can take the capsules or liquid with or without food. Try to take your medicine at regular intervals throughout the day. Mealtimes (breakfast, lunch and dinner) are useful reminders. You will usually feel more comfortable within 1 or 2 days of treatment. Reduce the dose as your condition gets better. Chances are you probably know all there is to know about Superdrug, but if you don’t then here’s a little more detail about them. If your doctor or midwife recommends docusate, instead of lactulose or Fybogel, it’s usually ok to use this medicine while breastfeeding. The amounts of docusate found in breast milk are probably very small and are unlikely to affect your baby.

Taking an extra dose of docusate as a one-off is unlikely to harm you, but it is a good idea to drink lots of water. You may get diarrhoea and stomach pain, but this will usually get better within 1 or 2 days. Docusate sodium oral solution is also available without a brand name, ie as the generic medicine, in both paediatric and adult strengths. Enema – squeeze the tube of liquid gently into your anus. The information leaflet which comes with your docusate will explain how to do this.

2. Key facts

Liquid – this comes with a plastic cup or spoon to measure the dose. Do not use a kitchen spoon as it will not give the right amount. If you do not have a cup or spoon, ask your pharmacist for one. When you've swallowed it, drink plenty of water or have another drink, such as milk or orange juice.

Drink plenty of fluids (6 to 8 glasses a day) while you are taking docusate or your constipation may get worse. What if I forget to take it? Normal and regular bowel movement is important for most people. However, what is ‘normal and regular’ varies from person to person. Some may have a bowel movement every day, others less often. Whatever it is like for you, it is best that your bowel movement has a regular pattern. If diet and lifestyle changes do not work, your doctor or midwife may recommend a laxative, such as lactulose or Fybogel. These laxatives are quite often used during pregnancy and while breastfeeding. Docusate in pregnancy The safety of docusate sodium for use during pregnancy has not been fully established, though it has been in widespread use for many years with no reported harmful effects. As with all medicines, you should get medical advice from your doctor before taking DulcoEase if you are pregnant.

Adults and adolescents over 12 years of age should generally start treatment by taking one capsule three times a day. If this is not effective you can take a dose up to five times a day if needed, spread over the course of the day. Once your symptoms start to improve you should take the medicine less frequently. Stool softeners are just that — products that help make hard, dry, painful poo softer. They work by softening the poo in the intestine, which makes it easier and more comfortable to pass. When used as directed, stool softeners are a safe, gentle way to keep things moving. Thank you for taking the time to read our Dulcoease Capsules x 30 review from the Medical category. About Superdrug Medicines and their possible side effects can affect individual people in different ways. The following are some of the side effects that are known to be associated with DulcoEase. Just because a side effect is stated here doesn't mean that all people using this medicine will experience that or any side effect. Prevention of hard, dry stools and reduction of straining at stools in the presence of conditions like haemorrhoids or anal fissures

Enema – normally 1 tube of liquid is all you need. If you need a second dose, you can use it later in the day or the next day. Docusate sodium may pass into breast milk so should be used with caution during breastfeeding. As with all medicines, you should get medical advice from your doctor before taking DulcoEase if you are breastfeeding. Never take 2 doses at the same time. Never take an extra dose to make up for a forgotten one. What if I take too much? Docusate also stimulates the nerve endings in the walls of the large bowel (colon) and rectum. This makes the muscles in the bowel wall contract more often and with increased force, which moves the stools through the colon to the rectum so that the bowel can be emptied. Prolonged, excessive use of laxatives can lead to diarrhoea, low potassium levels in the blood (hypokalaemia) and an imbalance in the amount of fluid and salts (electrolytes) in the body. Prolonged, excessive use may also make the constipation worse in the long-term, as the gut can become reliant on the laxative. Don't exceed the recommended dose of DulcoEase or use it for more than five days unless advised to by your doctor. If you're pregnant or breastfeeding, you can try to treat constipation without taking a medicine. This involves eating more fibre and drinking plenty of fluids. It may also help to do gentle exercise.
