Remember, they also have rights to the claim they released the first ever punk single, “New Rose”. This is a band that not only has a history but made history. This is also a band that started in punk but morphed and grew into experimenting with sound and vision.

In total the band played 11 songs from Darkadelic, all of which were received extremely well by the audience. There was a minor glitch at one point where drummer Will Taylor and the rest of the band seemed to have gone out of time with one another – Dave Vanian decided to stop the chaos and re-start the song, which was the correct thing to do. Later Captain Sensible quipped “ This is Will, our new drummer – he’s a very good drummer – usually!“ TV Guidance Counselor Podcast: TV Guidance Counselor Episode 42: David Vanian & Captain Sensible of The Damned". The Damned’s 12th studio album, and first in five years, was “pretty much finished” before the 2022 reunion tour of the original quartet, who were the first U.K. punk band to release a single (“New Rose” in October 1976) and to tour the U.S. Darkadelic reflects the band’s continuing musical evolution; its usual gothic-flavored drama is intact, but filled with intricate instrumental dynamics and textures — particularly on “Western Promise,” a song with soundscapes that are accented by trumpets and sonic nods to ’80s new romantic fare. On 21 October 2020, The Damned announced that in 2021 the original line up of Dave Vanian, Captain Sensible, Brian James and Rat Scabies would play a series of shows. This would mark the first time in over two decades that James and Scabies have played with Vanian and Sensible. [65] Due to COVID concerns, it was later announced that the tour, while still featuring the same line-up, was postponed until 2022. In February 2023, the band's next studio album was announced with the title Darkadelic and was released on 28 April 2023. All three music videos were directed by Martin Gooch. [66]

Despite peaking with its singles, Darkadelic is a pleasantly consistent album. The worst song is probably the forgettable "Bad Weather Girl" - which at least is inoffensive if forgettable filler. The weaker tunes are elevated by the musicianship and graced with excellent solos, and more often than not have pleasant 60s pop-esque choruses that are effectively hooky. Promoted with a series of long tours prior to its release, by the time the album was released the Damned had yet again split, partly as the result of legal battles: Vanian and Sensible accused Scabies of releasing Not of This Earth (1995) without proper authorization.
