About this deal

Along with the Pro RT seatpost, Redshift has released a Pro version of their suspension stem. This stem uses titanium hardware and weight-reducing CNC machining to get the weight down to between 230 and 250 grams, depending on the stem length. For looks, quality and attention to detail I will give the stem 9.5 out of 10 (.5 lost for the boxy look)

Redshift Sports spent a significant amount of time on the pivot design focused on torsional stiffness and durability. The pivot is constructed using very high tolerance full compliment ball bearings (like the ones used in mountain bike rear suspension pivots) and a high tolerance custom pivot bolt. And we are not just clamping at the pivot we are also press fitting everything together to eliminate the possibility for wear. Without wear the pivot will stay stiff and will not develop play over time. Includes 5 swappable elastomers (2 pre-installed, 3 additional) to customise the ride feel for your bike, weight, and riding style. My electric cargo bike does have a positive rise stem (a Surly Big Dummy with an aftermarket Bafang motor added), so it fits well on that. The extra-long wheelbase, steel frame and large-volume tires make that bike reasonably comfortable already, but the urban roads and paths that I use it on sometimes aren’t so smooth and the fork is rigid. The Kinekt Suspension Stem improved the comfort on that bike considerably and improved bike control by keeping the front wheel more planted on the ground.

As I mentioned earlier, the biggest downside to this simple and lightweight stem design is that the handlebars tip forward under compression. This takes a little getting used to. The Freeqence uses an elastomer-spring setup with 30mm of travel, which can be adjusted to accommodate riders from 50kg through to 120kg. While coil-spring stems like the Kinekt are highly reactive over fast bumps, the Freeqence should feel a bit more ‘muted’ in comparison, as the properties of elastomers have more inherent damping. One might think that coming up with an elastomer-based, single-pivot suspension stem would be pretty easy. However, as with most things, doing it well is easier said than done, and Cane Creek has actually been working on this project for quite a long time — since at least some time in 2018. Once you determine the length of your existing stem round to the nearest 10 mm and choose the closest match.

There are two main philosophies when it comes to add-on suspension stems. On the one hand, you have models like the Cirrus Cycles Kinekt, which uses a parallelogram-style linkage that maintains a constant handlebar angle throughout the range of travel, but at the expense of weight, complexity, and bulkiness. More common is the single-pivot approach. Here, the bar angle changes as the stem moves, but the format is much lighter, simpler, and compact. Redshift suggests that riders up to 80kg should only use the main spring and those from 90kg to 110kg must install the inner spring as well. With the main spring fitted, my unit weighed 538g.

degree in 80, 90, 100, 110, and 120mm lengths (in both standard 1 1/8" steerer and the non-standard oversized 1 1/4" steerer which matches most Canyon and some Giant bikes) Alternate method: Use a fabric or paper measuring tape (or print one at https://printable-ruler.net/ ) and measure the circumference of the handlebar right next to your existing stem. The other main option to compare against would be an increased tyre size, which can also increase comfort when set at suitable pressures. Still, while this can be advantageous, it can also have downsides, such as slower rolling resistance in some cases and frame clearance in most gravel bikes. To understand more, Redshift Sports have answered critics in this post. Will the stem bounce or flex when I am climbing out of the saddle or sprinting? Any bag that just attaches to the saddle or just attaches to the post is fine. But when you attach to both the post and the saddle you need to account for the relative motion of the saddle to the post. This means that if you cinch down the bag when off the bike it might have some movement when you get on the saddle and compress the post a bit - this might not be a problem but it might be something that is an issue. Terms & Conditions Apply. The ICS MTT x Redshift Stem is catered to a broad range of users, from Gravel to All-Road and Endurance, without forgetting Fitness and Urban riders that prefer flat handlebars. Although the eeSilk stem may have had a bumpy road getting here, what Cane Creek ended up with works really well (and certainly looks a lot better). You can measure the length of your existing stem by measuring the length from the center of the handlebar to the center of the steerer tube. The small unweighted saddle height increase needs a slight adjustment when mounting up for the first time. At the suggested preload setting, I immediately felt neutrally suspended and didn’t notice any negative effect on seated pedalling.

During much of the test period I was riding 50mm carbon aero wheels with 25mm tubeless tyres – a rather radical departure from my usual 24mm alloy rims and 28mm tubeless. How does it feel? The damping won’t stop you from biking on the edge. Your bike will continue to steer straight and when riding out of the saddle you will still get full performance on the pedals. The ICS MTT x Redshift Suspension Stem completes the evolution of Micro Travel Technology, a complete ecosystem of integrated suspension components designed to elevate the riding experience across a wide range of riding styles through efficiency, seamless integration and low weight. While it may not be the best looking stem out there, a product like this is designed to be functional first and foremost - providing up to 20mm of travel at the handlebars, smoothing out rough terrain as you go.
