About this deal

Rodriguez noted: “It shows that for the price you’re paying, you can get some good-quality mixing rums. Some you wouldn’t mind sipping, and would work in a Mai Tai or Rum Punch – you can’t go wrong. It’s impressive.”

Exuberant and appealing, the whites convey powerful notes of flowers and fruit with expressive fresh sugarcane juice aromas. This unique style comes from a rigorous selection of our sugarcanes, crushed within 24 hours of their harvest, and a careful distillation that complies with the pure traditional method in Creole columns, among which one is copper. Cinzano Prosecco D.O.C. is an aromatic sparkling wine, from the best vineyard areas of the Colline Trevigiane. It is a young sparkling wine, with a vivacious froth and subtle but persistent perlage. Tasting notes for Depaz XO included “a rich Cognac-like nose” leading to a “floral, aromatically fruity palate with orange and grapefruit peel”. “A sipping rum; absolutely beautiful,” enthused Rodriguez. Old J Tiki Fire took home a Gold medal in the Gold Rum – Overproof heat, with its “warming buttery finish”. Then, Depaz VSOP was enjoyed for hints of “popcorn, wood, roasted banana” on the nose, leading to “a floral, ripe, fat and weighty” palate, with notes of “grapefruit and orange blossom”.Robust, sweet with primary savours of sugarcane, they reflect the generous climate of Southern Martinique and its unique terroir. Holyrood delivered again in the Dark Rum – Aged over 13 Years flight, netting another Master: Elizabeth Yard – Travellers Distillery – Ungrogged American Oak No 1 Char Octave. Smith liked this rum’s “light spiciness with just the right amount of sweetness”. Plantation XO 20th Anniversary was found to have “light tonka bean” on the nose, leading to “chocolate, wood varnish, dried vanilla and milk cream” on the palate, with “weighty mouthfeel and texture”.

The following flights abandoned price points, focusing instead on the rum’s performance based on its relevant age category. In the Gold Rum – Aged up to 7 Years heat, a Master award was given to Barracuda Gold Rum. The judges praised the rum’s “fruity banana funk on the nose” and its “creamy, green banana and coffee” flavours. Four Gold medals and a Silver award were also celebrated in this round. Trois Rivières is bringing five expressions to the States. We received two of them for review, both entry-level offerings. Let’s dig in. David T Smith, spirits writer, consultant and co-founder of the Craft Distilling Expo, chaired the third group, which consisted of: Alan Uresti Silva, head of mixology at Annabel’s Mayfair; and Laurence Baker, general manager at Callooh Callay group. The flight also delivered 11 Gold medals and three Silvers. Gold medallists included Worthy Park Select, Mezan Chiriqui, Embargo El Ron Libre, and Santa Teresa 1796.The Sicilian Pine expression caught the judges’ interest for delivering “lots of pine” on the nose, while still allowing the rum to shine through with added “rosemary notes”. Prousaefs said: “This was a complex and diverse flight, from unaged cachaças to aged cane spirits. The unaged cachaças definitely stole the show, with the rest of the spirits following through.” The Plantation benefits from an exceptional terroir that retains all the wealth and flavor from the sugarcane and gives Trois Rivières’ rums their character and their rich flavors: over 1,700 acres of land, gently stroked by trade winds, overlook the sparkling sea in the sunniest, far-South part of the island. Uresti Silva noted the “diverse range of flavours” in this round, which he thought would be able to “target different markets”.

After whittling down the Masters to the judges’ favourites, the product that came out on top to claim the Taste Master title was Holyrood Distillery’s Elizabeth Yard – Travellers Distillery – Ungrogged American Oak No 1 Char Octave. If the Spiced round was lengthy, the Flavoured segment of the tasting was enormous – but with brilliant results. Three Master winners were enjoyed here, including two from Hitchhiker Rum: Hitchhiker Botanical Rum | Sicilian Pine, and Hitchhiker Botanical Rum | Breton Sea Salt.In the heart of the lush valley of Rivière Pilote in southern Martinique, Maison La Mauny has been making Agricole Rums elaborated with pure sugarcane juice for over 250 years. Established by Count de Mauny in 1749, the La Mauny Estate is part of Martinique’s historical heritage and renowned for the beauty of its terroir and its warm climate. Reduced slowly and progressively to 40% alcohol by volume, our amber rums are matured 12 months in oak tuns, according to the AOC Martinique standards. This enables them to develop a nice golden colour and fine woody notes while preserving the crisp taste of sugarcane juice Maison La Mauny rums, aged in oak, are luminous and hearty and remarkable for their delightful savours of spices and warm sugar. Cynar became popular in Italy thanks to the first ads (during the Italian “Carosello”) performed by the famous actor, Ernesto Calindri and the claim “Cynar, against the attrition of modern life”. First up, Master-winning Havana Club Maximo. This rum was described as having “rich raisins” on the nose, leading to “treacle” on the palate. “Robust and a good intensity for 40% ABV – good texture, too,” noted Smith.

Cinzano Asti D.O.C.G. is the most renowned of all the Cinzano sparkling wines. It is produced using white Moscato grapes from the D.O.C.G. area of Asti, in the heart of Piedmont. It possesses a sweet and fruity flavour.True pioneer from the very start, Maison La Mauny combines know-how and creativity to develop new recipes that are always more attractive and bottles an elixir of conviviality, typical of Martinique.
