About this deal

The iPhone 11 Pro Max is the larger of Apple's two 2019 flagship phones. Compared to last year's XS Max, it features major improvements to the camera as well as boosts in processing power and battery life. I think the phone has a very nice look and it feels very nice in the hand. The phone has a very good camera and you can take very nice pictures with it and play very many games and the phone has a lot of memory. The battery also lasts very long and the camera's functions are limitless. The software looks very good and runs smoothly. It also has enough ICloud storage space. All in one top cell phone! Clearly, it makes much more financial sense to choose an Android phone but, if money’s no object and your heart is set on Apple’s latest flagship, then there is no doubt you’ll be pleased with the iPhone 11 Pro Max. It looks and feels fabulous and, despite my initial reservations about the triple-protrusion of camera lenses on the rear, these look much nicer in the metal than they do glaring out at you from Apple’s billboard ads. You can save some of that money if you go for the iPhone 11 Pro, which is identical to the Pro Max just with a smaller, 5.8in screen and inferior battery life. I think you’d be mad to do that; if you’re going to spend this much cash on a phone, you might as well go all out and get the iPhone 11 Pro Max.

Still, that’s the only big area of contention and, in other areas, Apple stretches out a lead. It’s IP68 rated for dust- and water-resistance, which means in this case that it can be submerged in up to four metres of water for up to 30 minutes. That’s equivalent to the depth of an Olympic diving pool. A feature Tom Daly might find useful, then, if he could squeeze it into his Speedos. The new OLED screen seems to have more of a yellow tinge when you’re viewing white scenes or looking at photographs – these tints aren’t present when images are viewed on a computer screen, for example, so it appears to be and issue with the calibration of the device. In day-to-day use, of course, the screen doesn’t reach peaks anywhere near this high – and nor does it need to. Measured highs of 758cd/m²(in auto-brightness mode) are more than bright enough to ensure the screen is easily readable in the brightest of ambient light. The rest of the design is very similar to what we’ve seen from Apple in recent years: the notch remains, the sides are curving stainless steel and the bottom of the phone houses a Lightning connector and two speaker grilles (for symmetry - only one actually fires sound outwards). Video has also been improved. It now offers several modes for intuitive handling and better results. It is possible to record with an extended contrast range, ensuring that light and dark areas are more detailed. You can also toggle between video and photo mode with a single press. The front camera includes a new slow motion feature, called "slofie". iOS 13 operating system provides an extensive selection of post-processing tools. iPhone 11 Pro or Pro 11 Max? Well, whether that conspiracy theory is true or not, the battery life on the iPhone 11 Pro Max is strong indeed, and here’s how we fared on the third day of testing...

Yes, it rivals the cost of some MacBooks in certain territories, but that’s not really a fair comparison - these are different products with different specifications, designed to do very different things. However, it does illustrate how expensive the iPhone 11 Pro Max is. The raw performance of the iPhone 11 Pro Max also impressed, although we did encounter some slowdown in the camera app; however, if you're looking to edit video on the go (and don’t forget this phone can shoot 4K at 60 frames per second, and do it well) then you’ll enjoy the extra grunt on offer. There's also SharePlay where you can share music, watch TV shows and movies, alongside sharing your screen, so you can show a recipient how you use a certain app.The display has rounded corners that follow a beautiful curved design, and these corners are within a standard rectangle. When measured as a standard rectangular shape, the screen is 5.42 inches (iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 12 mini), 5.85 inches (iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone X S, iPhone X), 6.06 inches (iPhone 14, iPhone 13 Pro, iPhone 13, iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12, iPhone 11, iPhone X R), 6.12 inches (iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15, iPhone 14 Pro), 6.46 inches (iPhone 11 Pro Max, iPhone X S Max), 6.68 inches (iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 13 Pro Max, iPhone 12 Pro Max), or 6.69 inches (iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro Max) diagonally. Actual viewable area is less. If you’ve not got anyone around you, that cinematic feel can be improved by playing sound out of the speakers - Apple has created a virtual surround sound setup, and while it’s not as good as hearing the same thing through a decent pair of headphones, the sound does feel like it’s moving around your ears. Although you’ll probably then want to put it in an iPhone 11 Pro Max case to protect it, because it’s really expensive and you don’t want to be explaining to your other half that you’ve ruined it in a week’s time.
