About this deal

In a minor accident at age 12, Telgemeier lost two front teeth, not minor to remedy. Following came years of dental surgeries and orthodontics involving implants, false teeth, and headgear far beyond the more usual "braces." Treatment complications interacted with the complications of teenagerhood and puberty, which led to social as well as medical turmoil. Yet Telgemeier's early career choice as an animator grew out of this difficult period. With lively color art; an entertaining and helpful read for tweens and teens facing dental complexities of their own.

Raina is a likable girl with supportive and understanding parents. Though she makes some missteps, such as standing up a boy at a dance, it's her process of correcting those missteps that makes this such a relatable and true-to-life story. Readers will be encouraged and comforted by the path Raina takes to finding new friends that support her. Following the success of the implementation of pupil SMILE books and to ensure clarity in understanding of the Curriculum for Wales, I decided to trial the SMILE book format myself, to record my planning. This helped me to develop greater depth of knowledge and understanding of the Four Purposes, Cross-Curricular Links, Pedagogical Principles and the What Matters Statements for each of the AoLEs. In all honesty it was a hard book to read at times. Hard to Face your face and the ways Bell’s palsy or a facial injury has impacted your life. The pain that comes when people turn away from you because we see people as their face. And with bells palsey and facial injuries there is lots of that. Often people don’t know they do so. There is a shaming there. This book is a meditation on what it means to have a face, what our faces reflect about us. About looking for answers when there may be none. About finding a way to take one step forward and then another. She reads, she listens. She writes. She finds some professionals who say they can help, only to be crushed with disappointment. She learns to find joy in small triumphs. She shares all these struggles with us, not in self-pity, but in self-knowledge. As a Pioneer School we collaborated with colleagues who were at the same point of their curriculum journey as us. Following this collaboration, we agreed to trial the introduction of our SMILE books in Y2 and Y6 with staff who were members of SLT and involved in curriculum reform.

In these early stages, expectations were shared and pupils were given a variety of resources to enable them to present their work in their preferred format within the books – enabling all individuals to lead, manage and present their knowledge, skills and learning independently. Our SMILE approach continues to develop here at Trellech, ensuring the continual development of our learners and independent learners with a valued voice. Although the graphic novel form may provide more opportunities for levity than the traditional novel structure, Smile shows that this literary style can be used to convey serious and emotional events in a compelling manner. [8] Analysis [ edit ] From Raina Telgemeier, the #1 New York Times bestselling, multiple Eisner Award-winning author of Smile, Drama, and Sisters!There is nothing in the book that grabs me. The writing is good without being sparkling as in the last book I read which I didn't get into for a long way What's A Lemon Squeezer Doing In My Vagina?: A Memoir of Infertility. IThe author seems to be a pretty nice woman. think that maybe this is a good book and I'm just the wrong audience for it as there is nothing I can put my finger on why I really want to dnf it. Although Smile is not a violent story, there are moments of teeth-related gore that might gross out some readers, especially when Raina falls and loses her front teeth and leaves a pool of blood on the asphalt.

While the story opened my eyes to how differently people are perceived just because of an asymmetrical face, and while I felt a lot of empathy for the author and her experience, I think I expected a deeper, more introspective look at the experience. And while there were parts of the book that focused on that, a lot of it was more focused on random stories from the author's life as well as her plan of treatment and the experiences with different doctors.Are building up a body of knowledge and have the skills to connect and apply that knowledge in different contexts;
