It’s a shame that more budget models (and quite a few expensive ones) don’t include Dolby Vision because it really makes a difference with HDR on less capable TVs. The UK31 allows you to enjoy Dolby Vision content on Netflix and supported 4K discs, which is a big plus at its price point. With the smart TV market broadening in terms of options, Toshiba has launched an Android model as part of its line-up. The UL21 is one of four 4K and HD Ready TVs launched by Toshiba at the end of 2021 that balance a handful of high-end features at an affordable price. The UK31 was clearly clipping HDR10 content, whether it was graded at 1,000, 4,000 or 10,000 nits. However, watch exactly the same footage with Dolby Vision and the results are very different. The format’s dynamic metadata precisely maps the HDR to the display’s capabilities, producing images free of any clipping, with saturated but natural-looking colours. Again, you need to choose a Dynamic Contrast setting that best suits your personal taste, but the picture is good either way. The finest details that more premium sets reveal are missing, but there's enough bite in all of the close-ups in that tavern scene. Whether it’s the CGI wrinkles of Maz, Solo’s worry lines or the smoother skin of Rey and Finn, the Toshiba makes for an enjoyable watch with the colours still holding true and little lost to the darkness. For audio devices you should use the Audio Link option via the following menu options on the TV: System > Sound Menu. For remote controllers, use the following: System > Options > More > Smart Remote. Select the menu option on your remote, and press ‘OK’ to open the related menu.
HDR10, HLG and Dolby Vision are covered on the HDR side, but there’s no Dolby Atmos sound with this model featuring a sound system developed by Onkyo. This is a good TV from Toshiba and a big improvement on what we’ve seen from this former great in recent years. The sound performance is poor, but that’s not an insurmountable problem, given that we’d usually advise some form of external sound source anyway. Again, there’s Dolby Vision and Atmos sound processing makes it to this model, while there’s the ‘Works with’ support for both Alexa and Google, so a connected device is required if you want to operate the TV ‘hands-free’. And while Toshiba seems partial to the Alexa smart ecosystem (which to be honest is the biggest on this planet), it also has Google Assistant support on some of its TVs, so there’s choice in terms of which smart system you want to go for.
