About this deal

Most telescopic tree pruners for residential use will extend up to approximately 2 m. This tends to give enough reach for the majority of small trees and bushes without needing to use a step or telescopic ladder. Of course, if you have some trees that are slightly larger, you will be able to use the pruner in conjunction with a ladder as well. However, for the most part you won’t need to. They come with a 330 mm saw which gives the user extra cutting power on larger branches, although it’s worth noting that this saw is a little weak and not particularly effective. The saw also occasionally gets caught on branches and needs to be removed. The Draper Expert Telescopic Tree Pruner is a quality garden tool at an affordable price. It’s built with professional gardeners and landscapers in mind as well as the average domestic gardener. The long 47cm blade is curved to reach around the branches and cut sharply. The telescopic handle extends to 2.5m which, when you add in your own height, gets quite high up into your trees. Although this is a lightweight long reach tree pruner, it can feel a little heavy when fully extended as you move it around. Pros Instead of allowing free adjustability between its lengths, you can only one of three positions: no extension, half extended or fully extended. Therefore, there are some limitations.

At first glance, the many different pole saws available on the market all appear pretty similar, but take a closer look and you’ll notice some key variations between them. Some are better suited to certain tasks than others, so it’s important to first identify exactly what you’re hoping to do with your pole saw before starting your search.

Of course, cutting length matters too . If your branches are on the smaller side, then you may not need anything longer than 15cm, which would make the head much lighter and easier to manoeuvre. However, if you have chunky, mature branches to prune, then look for something longer – our recommended pole saws go up to 30cm in length. Tend to be very heavy which (especially combined with an extended handle) can make them difficult to support and control. The battery life is reasonable. If you’re using the hedge trimming attachment, the battery will last up to 40 minutes, while you should get an hour of battery life when using the saw attachment.

Manual tree pruners are best if you’ll be cutting lots of fresh, live stems and branches . We’re talking bushes, hedges and young trees. In most instances, I recommend looking for pruners that have a cutting diameter of around 2.5cm – this will be suitable for most domestic pruning jobs. Extending and collapsing the pole couldn’t be easier; I just opened the lever, slid the inner pole to the desired length and then closed the lever. Soft grip handles ensure that your hands are comfortable while working. Even if you are gripping the handle for long periods, your muscles will not experience extreme soreness. It doesn’t have a gearing or ratchet system, so you must use brute force to cut through branches. I’m quite strong, but after prolonged use, even my arms got tired. One other issue is that the cord isn’t quite long enough when the handle is at full extension, so you may need to lengthen it if you’re regularly pruning at full extension. The Fiskars Pruner was selected as an alternative as it’s very similar with only subtle differences. Will you be using the Hayauchi for the first time Start with lower branches to get familiar with the pruning technique and always think of your own safety. Wear a safety helmet and make sure you stand at a safe distance from falling branches.
