Having been depicted as a waster by his sister, in the late 00s he became known as a party animal who was regularly photographed staggering out of clubs and around festivals with his friends Nick Grimshaw, Alexa Chung and his then-girlfriend Jaime Winstone. As is the case in the series, Jock's vehicle was repeatedly attacked by Italian and German aircraft. In the documentary, it describes how Lewes fell for Senta Adriano - a society girl who was a member of the Nazi party - and even became engaged to her.

In the novel, like in real life, Steel/Lewes and Madeleine/ Mirren met for the first time at Jock’s sister Elizabeth’s wedding in Oxford.
