About this deal

What is impressive is that Jodie Chapman knows both worlds and can give both perspectives and whilst there is no way that her view isn’t coloured by her experiences she doesn’t force them upon her reader. Each chapter moves quickly, giving us bursts of action and emotion before switching seamlessly to the next moment.

Oh, Sister: The powerful new novel from the author of Another

Disciples believe that when Armageddon comes they will be the only ones saved, enter Paradise and live happily ever after. Somehow, the writing was such that I felt a deep connection and kinship with all of these women, despite me having little to nothing in common with them. This week I am joined by Jodie Chapman to discuss the stories that need to be told, the importance of writing truth, and her latest novel, Oh Sister. I am glad that Zelda and Isobel eventually break free of their confines and find some sort of peace and happiness.

The decisions they have to make, or are made for them, are enormous, and I really felt for all of them. Zelda Bloom is a creature of sin and abjection according to the brotherhood she was born into, a people whose cruelty continues to haunt her after all these years of successfully having run away from it – until. It also offers a gentle reminder to appreciate the people in our lives who accept and love us unconditionally, exactly how we are. In style, Oh, Sister is certainly more commercial than literary; I was not the greatest fan of the writing on a sentence level. We collaborate with authors across all adult fiction genres, and also handle children’s books, young adult and cross-over fiction.

The characters have multiple side-plots, which adds to their multi-dimensional feel and really enriches main themes. Jen suffered a miscarriage and d Throughout the story we learn how these women have been controlled and abused by the men in the religion. This was a powerful read which at times made me angry about the injustice that’s the lot of some women and how religion normally lets men get away with things while it’s the women who have to suffer in silence.Despite the demands made of them, they are not flawless, soft, compliant women - they can be abrasive, sharp, strong - angry at a world that clearly isn't made for them and desperate for a way to survive.

Oh, Sister by Jodie Chapman - Fantastic Fiction

As someone who is not particularly religious I found it a fascinating study of a religion that I really would have no idea about if it were not for books like Oh, Sister. You would think they would be a bit samey, and I suppose there are similar themes, but the authors all of their own personal experience and therefore they can put part of themselves in their books, giving each one the edge. This week Jessica Huntley joins me to discuss writing thrillers, how and why she self-publishes, the book everyone should be reading, and her new book, Jinx. Instead of working through this grief with a counsellor she clings to the idea of Armageddon and the utopian afterlife. This might not be a relevant point to many readers, but I like knowing the location to understand the story and characters better. Do check TWs because it’s an incredibly emotive story, with child loss, sexual abuse and more, but it’s written with compassion and care and feels very wise.

And I have no doubt it was an incredibly difficult thing to grow up thinking and it was an incredibly difficult thing to leave, but her experiences have created one hell of a book. Avevo già amato Jodie Chapman in Another Life, e questo è un altro libro che non ti puoi lasciare alle spalle. Of course, skipping this info might have been a deliberate choice so as to make the plot feel universally relevant. There are so many layers to it, it’s so complex, and you can see how difficult it must be to put the religion above your family and friends, but also how difficult it is to put yourself above the religion.First of all, there’s Jen Musgrove who has undergone a personal tragedy and is subservient to husband Pete - or is she?
