About this deal

Ahead of October’s HFSS legislation, Mondelez has released reduced sugar versions of Maynards Bassetts and The Natural Confectionery Co gummies in an HFSS-compliant Juicies range. I've already converted many in the US to these. There is NOTHING in the world that compares to the flavour intensity and chewy texture of Maynards Wine Gums. Miss these terribly from the UK, but THANK YOU BCS for making these easily accessible for this humble addict. Jelly babies are a junior version of wine gums, but they're softer and have a more jelly-like consistency. They're also dusted in starch, giving them their unique appearance. Despite the labelling on each sweet with words such as sherry and port, there's no alcohol content, so they're suitable for adults and children.

Heritage consumer favourites in sugar confectionery, Maynards Bassetts and The Natural Confectionery Co., are tapping into the trend towards authentic ingredients this summer with the launch of an exciting new HFSS-compliant range: ‘Juicies’. Confectionery shoppers were “still looking for the best-tasting products which are also fun, made for sharing and made with trusted, authentic ingredients”, said Mondelez brand manager for joyful Anna Ulrich. Gummy bears are softer than wine gums and have a more jelly-like consistency, but they offer a fruity flavour perfect for children. These are by far the best wine gums available on the market, and it is great to see them here at BCS! The flavours are classic and very natural compared with other brands. The texture is also just right, a perfect balance between soft and chewy. A delight to have "on hand" at any time of the day or as a special treat! The new range will comprise Maynards Bassetts Wine Gums Juicies, Maynards Bassetts Sports Mix Juicies and The Natural Confectionery Co Juicy Snakes, each of which includes real fruit juice and 30% less sugar than the standard equivalents.Lion confectionary has also been making Wine Gums in the United Kingdom for over a century, and is currently owned by Valeo Confectionary, although was one owned by Cadbury. These have a firmer texture than other brands and, therefore, tend to last longer in the mouth. Mondelēz International is launching a range of non-HFSS sweets called Juicies across its Maynards Bassetts and The Natural Confectionery Co. brands. Maynards Bassetts was “ideally placed to tap into the authenticity and naturalness trend with this new range”, it added. The original shapes for each sweet are traditionally kidney, crown, rhombus, circle, and oblong. However, these shapes vary with each manufacturer. Where are they made?

For example, Haribo is one of the most popular confectionery brands globally, and they make their own version of wine gums. These taste great and come in a large bag for everyone to enjoy.Lion Wine Gums are still made with the traditional recipe and made at a British factory. Which Wine Gums are suitable for vegetarians and vegans? While jelly beans are smaller and harder, they still offer intense flavours and can be enjoyed by people of all ages. Also, the flavours are exotic, including popcorn, cotton candy and other popular combinations. Maynards Bassetts Wine Gums have been made at the Cadbury Trebor Bassett factory in Sheffield since 1991. Before this, they were manufactured at Vale Road in London. Maynards and Bassetts (George Bassett & Co.) are both brands of Cadbury (owned by Mondelez International, Inc., which was originally Kraft Foods). The two brands merged in 2016 to form Maynards Bassetts, which is the brand that Wine Gums are produced under today. Haribo Wine Gums contain beeswax and animal-derived gelatine, so they are not vegan friendly and unsuitable for vegetarians. The core range of each of these brands will still be available, offering more choice than ever through our expanded portfolio in a soon to be HFSS-restricted world,” said Ulrich.

We hope you enjoyed this post and that you now know everything there is to know about wine gums. These sweets are delicious, full of flavour and perfect for any occasion. Just remember to enjoy them in moderation! Wine Gums were launched by Maynard's in 1909. They were developed by Charles Gordon Maynard, the son of Charles Riley Maynard, although he struggled to convince his teetotal father that they did NOT contain wine! Charles Riley Maynard had started producing and selling sweets with his brother Tom in 1880, from their family kitchen in Stoke Newington, London.

American hard gums are similar to wine gums, but they're harder and have a more intense flavour. They're also available in a broader range of flavours, including pineapple and pear. Wine Gums: The Conclusion Apple is the most popular fruit in the UK and blueberry is a leading flavour for confectionery,” says Georgie Feldman, external communications manager at brand owner Mars Wrigley. A contributor may have been the extraordinarily hot weather this summer: sugar confectionery doesn’t melt like chocolate,” Roberts says. “It has high household penetration like chocolate but has benefited because of its ability to meet different occasions and need-states through variety of choice, portability and added functional and health benefits.” With the HFSS clampdown looming, other innovating suppliers took the no-added-sugar route earlier this year. Like Fruit Gummies from Naturelly (see Top Launch, below) which uses only fruit sugar – as does Mondelez’s recent NPD.
