One for Crichton himself: Despite his extensive research, sometimes Crichton would simply make up facts, present them as real, and cite them in his footnotes. But he didn't always remember which facts he made up, which would sometimes lead him to spend hours or days attempting to chase down an obscure book or article only to find out that he'd made up the entire thing.

Crichton had begun writing Sphere in 1967 as a companion piece to The Andromeda Strain. His initial storyline began with American scientists discovering a 300-year-old spaceship underwater with stenciled markings in English. However, Crichton later realized that he "didn't know where to go with it" and put off completing the book until a later date. The novel was published in 1987. [51] It relates the story of psychologist Norman Johnson, who is required by the U.S. Navy to join a team of scientists assembled by the U.S. Government to examine an enormous alien spacecraft discovered on the bed of the Pacific Ocean, and believed to have been there for over 300 years. The novel begins as a science fiction story, but rapidly changes into a psychological thriller, ultimately exploring the nature of the human imagination. The novel was adapted into the 1998 film directed by Barry Levinson and starring Dustin Hoffman. [52] Timeline is played from a first-person perspective, with a focus on adventure and puzzle-solving. [1] [2] The plot of Timeline is largely similar to the novel, [1] [3] with some changes that include the absence of the novel's scientific aspect and character development, and the removal of characters such as Andre Marek. [2] [3] [4] In 1990 he released his most successful work, the novel Jurassic Park, about a theme park where dinosaurs are created using genetic engineering. Not only did it sell millions of copies worldwide and get adapted into a massively successful film by Steven Spielberg (in fact, the highest-grossing ever made at the time), it sparked a renewed interest in Crichton, his older books getting reprinted and bought on a large scale, including A Case of Need, the nonfiction Five Patients, and the John Lange-era Binary. Film adaptations of Crichton's works also became suddenly commonplace, including adaptations of Congo and Sphere, although all but Jurassic Park (1993) were met with mostly negative reactions. a b c Judith Martin (February 28, 1969). When besieging armies hurl fireballs into a castle, for example, those are real fireballs, not the computer-generated version, as in " Gladiator." Twenty years ago a filmmaker might have boasted that he had used computers for his effects. Now he gets points for using the traditional methods. The problem is, unless the shots involved are so bad, they call attention to themselves (and these are certainly not), it's not whether we're watching real fireballs or fake fireballs but whether we care about the fireballs at all.
