About this deal

It’s more important to discuss Idolator Lords next as they are core to how your army works. You can promote one Gorebeast Chariot or Chaos Chariot unit with only model to an Idolator Lord, it gives them the Exalted Chariot profile and they become Heroes and Priests (they also gain a bonus spell from down below). The errata also clarifies they gain Eye of the Gods, allowing them to gain the buffs from killing other heroes. The Chaos Lord on foot and on Manticore are both solid. The Manticore has a good anti-horde spell while on foot has a great buff spell and is cheap to boot, despite a recent cost increase. The slaves to Darkness spell lore is very good so you’ll probably bring at least one of these guys.

Warhammer Community unveiled the new minis and some more of what to expect with the battletome, but not necessarily in a good way. There are heaps of new tabletop gambits to discover inside – though the hellish headlines all herald Eye of the Gods boons and Ensorcelled Banners to let you lavish gifts on your most favoured units. Meet the Soul Stalkers, followers of Archaon and Champions of the Dark Prince. These warriors are united in their cunning and ruthless hunting prowess. Drawn from several of the hunting tribes that seek their glory around the Varanspire, The Soul Stalkers are often sent after specific targets of key value by Archaon, where coordinated and precision strikes are required to bring their quarry down. Insidious destruction is guaranteed to follow in the wake of wherever this damned warband aims their verdant ire. All in all I think this is a nice fluffy list which will be fun and meets our heavy metal theme from the Start Collecting! box. What will it cost? Set Tzeentch –On a 3+, reroll all saves for a target unit, making your units very tanky line holders. B

And Beyond!

units chosen in any combination from the following list: Chaos Chosen, Chaos Knights, Chaos Warriors, Chaos Marauders, Chaos Marauder Horsemen Speaking of which, with a new Battletome coming for them later this year, it’s likely they’ll also receive a new Vanguard boxed set much like the other factions. Paragons of Ruin: After setup is complete but before the first battle round begins, D3 friendly despoilers units may move up to 5″. We round out the command traits here with a real winner in my opinion, as melee orientated armies live and die based off their mobility and movement. Anything that effectively shrinks the table and distance your most important units are required to cover to get into melee is a great help. I would be hard pressed to take any of the other choices over this one because this ability is always going to be relevant and is useful to any game plan. A+ Despoilers Artefacts of Power Khorne –Basically identical to the Chaos Warshrine’s Khorne ability, on a 3+ reroll all hit rolls. Solid choice B+ This is a fun battalion if nothing else, but a 1/6 chance to cause D3 mortal wounds isn’t statistically going to dependable and I like to get a solid return on investment if I’m going to spend a chunk of points on a battalion. Ruinbringer Warband

Over the coming weeks, in the run-up to the release of the new edition and Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Dominion , we’re asking our supernally knowledgeable playtesters to give us the low-down on their favourite factions and how the new edition is affecting them. As you might have guessed, today we find ourselves in the domain of the Slaves to Darkness. Who Are the Slaves to Darkness? The existing Games Workshop Daemon Prince even comes in an AoS box but contains the Warhammer 40k version, wild! You have some really great variety. A mix of old Warhammer Fantasy Battle stuff, new AoS models and gorgeous Warcry warbands there’s a lot here. From chaff to big monsters, its here and you can customize your pillaging and slaughter to your liking. Leaders unit chosen from the following list: Chaos Lord on Manticore, Chaos Sorcerer Lord on Manticore, Chaos Lord on Daemonic Mount, Chaos Lord on Karkadrak, Chaos Lord or Chaos Sorcerer LordThis fearsome arch-fiend can be built in numerous ways, with different options to pay homage to each of the four dark gods, or Chaos Undivided! You’ll note that he bears some of the marks of his former existence as a Chaos Space Marine, now rippling and twisted into a horrifying new form. It’s time to unleash your inner evil overlord. Start Collecting! Slaves to Darkness is the perfect place to start your Chaos collection, giving you the beginnings of a Slaves to Darkness, Khorne, Slaanesh, Nurgle or Tzeentch force all in one box. Designed lovingly for the Mortal Realms, these models are only found in this set and make the ideal basis for your army. Hold the line with indomitable Chaos Warriors, crush your foes beneath the hooves of the Chaos Knights, and seek glory with the Chaos Lord on Karkadrak. These models are push-fit, making assembling your Chaos Horde simple, while optional heads on the Chaos Warriors mean even if you’ve bought this set before, you’ll be able to ensure your models look distinct. If you roll a 11-12 you can choose to either replace your hero with a Daemon Prince (that retains all spellcasting, command abilities and artifacts/traits) or you can heal D3 wounds on the model. This is a huge flavor win and it’s great if your hero in question is a cheap Chaos lord on foot where it becomes a straight upgrade. On the other hand, there’s definitely a decision to be made if said Chaos Hero is one of the more expensive and killy varieties like a Chaos Lord on Karkadrak or Sorcerer Lord on Manticore. Knights have a 10″ move which is OK for cavalry and a 75 by 42mm base. Knights also have a 4+ save and a 5+ mortal wound save with 3 wounds. Their big bases are helpful for screening but again they won’t survive prolonged attention.

Blasphemous Cuirass: Roll a dice each time a mortal wound is allocated to the bearer. On a 5+, that mortal wound is negated. A solid if boring defensive artefact that may see use if you are in a particular MW heavy meta. C+Huge swathes of the range are getting updated. First up, and cutting a mean-silhouette in their heavy armour and swirling capes, are the Chaos Warriors. This is a brand new multipart kit with new options, including a choice of hand weapons or halberds, an aspiring champion, a standard bearer, and a musician. Mighty Ritualist: When this general attempts to perform a Ritual of Sorcerous Might, that ritual is successful on a 2+. While this is unexciting, anything that improves your ability to consistently improve your spellcasting is very relevant so a strong consideration. A Unfortunately, they edited their post, and now there are two versions of their teaser post, one that seems to indicate the new models; both are and are not the Easy To Build versions. If you want pure metal though, buy a second Start Collecting! and use everything from both, excepting the second Karkadrak….. I am not saying it’s great on the table but you can turn the volume up to eleven and headbang your way to a 0-5. So, is it a buy?

With the above you’ll end up with 10 additional Warriors for when you look to expand to 2,000 points. You’ll also have a Warcry warband, which is nice. As always, shop around. You’ll be able to find retailers who’ll offer 15-20% off the prices above. If you live in the UK sign up to SCN Hobby World and join their mailing list, with them you’ll receive 25% off GW prices!

Scroll of Dark Unravelling: This is your standard one-use auto unbind scroll that many factions have access too, and it’s a solid choice if only because it’s reliable and can potentially shut down an opponent’s plan hard. Even having this artefact in play can change the way your opponent plays their hero phase, as they must consider carefully how they sequence spells to try and bait out the Scroll. A The ranks of Chaos Knights are filled with warriors who have proven themselves exceptional in battle. They charge into battle atop their war steeds, skewering lesser foes with their powerful lances. These are previously available models which come with new options to add a banner bearer and musician.* Ogroid Theridons Charging into battle on blood-caked hooves, Chaos Knights are ready to make a shish-kebab of the enemy. The knights from the Start Collecting! Slaves to Darkness box will get a standalone release, with a new command retinue frame. There is also the option of an ensorcelled warhammer for their Doom Knight champion. Corrupted Nullstone –Once per battle, this unit can attempt to unbind 1 spell automatically, Wow! a real middle finger to your opponent, especially in the magic meta. Sure its only one, but with an auto-success just stopping one spell with no chance of failure can make all the difference. A
