About this deal

Know your garden. Know what to expect within each month. Have an idea which bulbs to plant and when they might flower. You might object that there’s no predicting the weather, and notoriously unreliable months like March and April may yield sunshine, snow, torrential rain, and something altogether different by the same afternoon. The Gardener’s World ‘Almanac’ has that covered, with sections on the weather that seem incredibly British. But then, as my father has always said, we only talk so much about the weather because (relative to other countries) there is so much of it to talk about. For each month, you’ll find: Something to prune, something to savour, a task to start, a task to finish, a thrifty project, head gardener’s job of the month, advice from a National Trust expert, plant focus, spotlight on plants in season wildlife, what to look for, how to help weather charts, sunrise and sunset, average temperatures trivia, facts too good to keep to yourself, quotations and even wit and wisdom from famous gardeners past and present. As well as gardening jobs there is a wildlife notes section for each month – encouraging us to garden in harmony with the natural world. Rekha Mistry also provides a mouth watering recipe of the month – perfect for the abundance of home grown produce we will hopefully have on our hands. As light levels reach the lowest in December I thought it was high time I reviewed this almanac to lift my spirits and start planning for the 2022 growing season. A month by month guide to your gardening year this almanac is crammed full of tips, hints, to do lists, sowing and planting inspiration. Like the end of the tv programme Gardeners’ World there is a handy “jobs to do this month” section which always acts as great reminder of those tasks that you sometimes forget or put off.

Interspersed with delicate illustrations and snippets of wisdom from gardening gurus, and a thoughtful foreword by Monty Don. Monty refers to this almanac as “….. your touchstone. It will guide you clearly and precisely when you need precision while also setting you free to do your own thing in your own time.” If you’re keen on wildlife too, then the book has that covered. It suggests what native or visiting creatures you may wish to look out for each month, and has the occasional project for devotees such as making a solitary bee hotel. For bird, insect and butterfly spotters, these sections will prove invaluable.
