The relationship between Juniper and Bear is described wonderfully and helps you connect to the characters. It's necessary and important, but also extremely well written, with wonderful characters and a gripping plot. Most of the humans it seems readily accept this new way of life, and the story quite cleverly shows us how they are effectively indoctrinated and made to accept this as the new normal.I'm sure this book has been incredibly popular with middle-grade readers and adults alike as it has some lovely and very important themes throughout. A thrilling and thought-provoking ecological adventure from a fresh new voice in children's fiction. I know it’s autumn because it’s the end of October and I am eight weeks into Year Eight, but there are no leaves to colour and fall and in our crowded, clean city the cold never really penetrates too much.

Because if we don’t change the way we live soon – very soon – it will be too late to save the planet. The initial familiar school setting instantly draws empathy from any reader who has ever felt isolated at school. Their friendship, familial bond, perseverance and character development was outstanding and a true pleasure to read. Those who live in cities are barricaded in away from any living creatures and plants, apart from the few plants allowed to be grown in 2 palm houses. Juniper and Bear live with their grandmother and have grown up closer to nature than most as she runs one of the few greenhouses in the city.

There are few who will help them but some firm friends and rebels working secretly provide the final pieces for their escape. She studied English at Cambridge, before completing a Computing Science masters at Imperial College London.
