About this deal

The Harlem Apollo pays tribute to Cicely Tyson, who died in January. Photograph: Mike Segar/Reuters In the 15 years I’ve been publishing the NYC Insider Guide, I’ve answered 1000’s of visitor questions, read dozens of forum posts, other articles online and of course, heard everyone’s “I wish I’d known XYZ before I came to NYC.” OK, hotel is booked, attractions are on the list, the myNY itinerary is ready, shopping spots are sighted and the first restaurants and bars are also noted. Now comes the last step on the list to the perfect travel planning for New York: the events, parades, and holidays. Once off the bridge, walk through leafy, historic Brooklyn Heights, especially the promenade above the river that offers splendid views of the downtown Manhattan skyline. And then, point yourself toward the tree-lined atmospheric neighborhood of Cobble Hill. Here is where you’ll find St Julivert Fisherie. Run by the husband-and-wife chef team Alex Raij and Eder Montero (who also run the excellent nearby La Vara), St. Julivert is an excellent seafood spot with an emphasis on European and South American coastal cuisine. Which neighborhood is best for you depends on several things: your interests, how close you want to be to the attractions and what your travel budget is. In the image below, I’ve drawn you my favorite neighborhoods of New York including the main attractions nearby.

Visit the Statue of Liberty: The trip from Battery Park to the Statue of Liberty is super-popular. To save yourself long waiting times, make sure you take the first ferry of the day. Here, you can find the best Statue of Liberty Cruises right now. Queens – the new trendy neighborhood: Queens is a bit more “normal” than Brooklyn is, but, lately, we’ve noticed that it is getting more and more gentrified. The hotels in Long Island City (not to be confused with Long Island!) are especially popular because they are cheaper compared to Manhattan—and they have a perfect connection to the Subway, which makes Queens a great alternative to Manhattan and Brooklyn. The cast list in Mitchell’s writing is impressive: exterminators, preachers, seafoodenarians. But what’s most important in this collection of reportage is Mitchell’s belief in the power of aimless walking and the unceasing generosity of the streets. I heard it repeated again and again. No matter what you’re into, New York will provide. If, like Mitchell, you’re interested in people, there is still a vernacular, there are still eloquent self-mythologisers. There is still a New York voice. It will still bend your ears.

Spending Christmas in New York or enjoying the pre-Christmas season in New York City is also a wonderful experience. The ice rinks are open, the city is beautifully decorated, and, if it snows, the dream vacation at wintertime is perfect! Paying in New York

The ultimate New York Travel Guide 2023 - Loving New York

I hope you enjoy my insider tips, the kinds of things you discover only when you have hundreds of friends and family members and our collective prior generations passing down “insider” information. The New York City Travel Guide should help you plan your New York City Vacation, so you not only go home as a NYC Insider, but plan to visit us again soon. How to Get the FREE BONUS New York City Travel Guide Work off your lunch by taking in more art at the Brooklyn Museum, the second largest museum in New York City. The 1895 Beaux Arts building include works by Mark Rothko, Edward Hopper, Georgia O’Keeffe and Edgar Degas.Going to a Musical in Broadway, spending an evening in Times Square, walking over Brooklyn Bridge, enjoying some shopping in Fifth Avenue or feeling like a broker in Wall Street are some of the things that can only be done in New York City. The NYC Insider Guide has been featured on Trip Advisor as both “Recommended Reading” and “NYC for New York City: First-time Visitors” and was highlighted as “New Yorker of the Month” on Ask a New Yorker. New York has become in recent years, and due to its own excellence, t he world’s most important economic and cultural capital. The city’s atmosphere and style of life are unique, difficult to explain in a guide, and they are best discovered by visiting and enjoying it in person. While working in midtown, photographer Gus Powell followed the lead of poet Frank O’Hara and spent his lunch hours making art. For Powell, the camera frame is where New Yorkers meet, just for a second, to create complex friezes of urban life. Look long enough and you’ll notice the connective substance between his figures – what Powell calls the plasma of New York. For me, there is no better representation of the complex pedestrian choreography of its sidewalks.

20 Best New York City Travel Guide Books of All Time

Plenty of books have been written about New York’s systems. (If you’re into sewers, lose yourself in Kate Ascher’s The Works: Anatomy of a City.) They’re interesting but don’t convey the New York I love – a city of voice and interruption, full of those ready to chachareando the days away. Is a sewer line going to speak up about the immigrant experience? Probably not. No one captures the small moments of New York like Maeve Brennan. I remember a woman at City Diner, 90th and Broadway, who’d appear most evenings with a fat Russian novel and a glass of diner white wine. Maeve Brennan would have written up her story in prose that would at first appear wispy before revealing its weight. Brennan performs exactly this feat in the 47 short pieces here, all of which appeared in the New Yorker between 1954 and 1981. They are slight only on first read. I have also read so much incorrect information online and often see our visitors on the street who have been misinformed. Think of this book as the guide to answer all the most commonly asked questions and avoid the most common mistakes about NYC Trip Planning and Vacations. Questions answered in the bonus New York City Travel Guide include:Visiting New York is worthwhile at any time of year, but I personally like the warm months best. Summer in New York can be very hot and humid. So, for many, the best times to visit New York is April and June, and September and October.
