About this deal

This saves weight and, since it isn’t subject to wear from the chain, the carrier is often made of a lighter material – carbon fibre in the case of Dura-Ace cassettes SRAM introduced its XD freehub standard when it started rolling out cassettes with a 10-tooth smallest cog. It recently ported this design over to the road with XDR, which also allows the use of 10-tooth cogs, but is slightly wider than the road bike standard. The AirBike UK 11 Speed Cassette 11-36T is an exceptional and economical alternative to mainstream brands, specifically designed to meet the needs of cyclists looking to repair or upgrade their bike. This high-quality cassette is compatible with both Shimano Cassette 11 Speed and 11 Speed Shimano Cassette systems, as well as Sram. On the mountain bike side, Shimano uses its Microspline freehub standard for its 12-speed Deore, SLX, XT and XTR groupsets.

Shimano M4100 Deore 10 Speed Cassette

If you are specifically using a Shimano HG freehub, you need to consider how wide the cassette you are buying is. Road wheels have slightly wider freehubs than MTB ones – by 1.85mm – and 11-speed Shimano HG road cassettes are slightly wider than 8- or 9-speed ones, again by 1.85mm. For example, SRAM boasts a 520 per cent range with its 10-52t cassettes. How has SRAM arrived at this figure, and how do you work out your gear range percentage? In the last couple of years, Shimano has introduced 11-34 cassettes at Tiagra, 105 R7000, and Ultegra R8000 levels, so the old 105 5800 is now the only enthusiast-level groupset you're likely to find on a new bike that doesn't officially work with 11-34, and there's not much 5800 left on bikes in the shops. You can always upgrade the rear mech to R7000. For example, at the lower end of the cassette, you can have as little as a one-tooth jump between the early cogs, and still have the range at the easier end. If you were running a 7- or 8-speed system, for example, in the same range, the jumps would be bigger.

Chain reaction Cycles and CRC are trading names of Wiggle Ltd (In Administration) registered in the United Kingdom at 1000 Lakeside, Suite 310, Third Floor N E Wing, Portsmouth, Hampshire, PO6 3EN, Now that 12-speed road bike groupsets exist, cassettes can have a larger range and the jumps between each gear can be relatively small. This shows how far you can push the envelope. I have even run 11-36 using a derailleur hanger extender and nothing suffers except bigger gaps in gears. Longevity of components is not compromised and chain cassette combo is still fresh after 3500 miles. Say you have 50-tooth and 34-tooth chainrings: the difference between the large one and the small one (50 minus 34) is 16 teeth. And say your bike is fitted with an 11-28T cassette: the difference between the large one and the small one (28 minus 11) is 17 teeth. Add them together and you get a total difference (16 plus 17) of 33 teeth. SRAM eTap AXS rear derailleurs can take up to a 33t for road, and this is denoted by the ‘Max 33t’ written on the inside of the derailleur cage. There is also a ‘Max 36t’ option to pair with the 10-36 cassette, as well as an XPLR rear derailleur, which can take up to a 44t.Put the ratios you already have into this and see what changing the cassette or chanrings would do for your set up. It’s important to note that this figure is only indicative of the range of gears you have on your cassette, and is not the same as working out how far you will travel with your chosen gear ratio. Cassettes are typically represented by the highest and lowest number of teeth in the cluster. Common examples for road bikes are 11-25, 11-28, and 11-30, which are among varied options with the Shimano Ultegra series. For mountain bikes, the 10-50 SRAM Eagle cassette is a popular choice.

Please be aware that depending on your specific hub and set up, you may require a spacer for the 11 speed 11-36 cassette to function smoothly. This may be a 0.5mm, 1mm or 1.85mm spacer, available in store. These days, it is increasingly common to see higher-spec road bikes with 12-speed gearing, Shimano having joined SRAM and Campagnolo with 12-speed groupsets in 2021 with the release of its Dura-Ace Di2 R9200 groupset.

Bike Cassettes and Cogs

Where an 11-28 cassette would have once been considered a large training cassette, it now sits at the lower end of the typical range for road. Simon Bromley / Immediate Media

Well, the smallest cog is a 10-tooth, and the largest cog is 52-tooth, which is 520 per cent larger than the 10-tooth cog, thus giving a 520 per cent range. So to summarize, if you are a competent home mechanic you can go way beyond manufacturers recommendations which are only there to cover themselves for warranty reasons. I agree on the lever front in general, but it's less straightforward in cycling, as the longer the lever, or crankarm, the higher your knee comes up, which makes it harder at the top of the power phase to push down. Like a deep versus less-deep squat, sort of! The very latest versions of Shimano's Ultegra and 105 GS rear derailleurs will actually handle an 11-40 cassette, which opens up a range of possibilities for gravel bikes, touring bikes, and any other situation where you're not in a hurry. It would have been uncommon to find a cassette as large as SRAM’s Eagle 10-50 a few years ago. Alex EvansShimano’s HG freehub design was the most common option for many years. Felix Smith / Immediate Media Those seeking a single cog will most often be looking to set up a singlespeed bicycle, while the majority of cyclists will be looking for a cassette because of its multi-gear functionality. Remember that the smaller cogs (with fewer teeth) make it harder to pedal but produce faster speeds, while larger cogs (with more teeth) are easier to pedal, making them ideal for climbing at slower speeds.
