About this deal

Catherine was successful in being offered the role of Mariette Charlton, née Larkin, eldest Larkin daughter. Ma and Pop Larkin and their five children – Mariette, Montgomery, Zinnia, Petunia and Primrose are returning home from a lovely outing to get fish and chips and some ice cream. When they arrive home, eldest Mariette notices a strange man in the yard, looking like he’s been waiting for them. Yet as junk-dealer Pop patiently explains: nothing's ever that simple at the Larkins'. Mariette takes a shine to 'Charley' - as Pop calls him - and before long the family have introduced the uncomplaining inspector to the delights of country living: the lusty scents of wild flowers, the pleasures of a bottle of Dragon's Blood, cold cream dribbled over a bowl of strawberries and the sweet song of nightingales. His collection of stories written while serving in the RAF during World War II, best known by the title The Stories of Flying Officer X, but previously published as Something in the Air (a compilation of his two wartime collections under the pseudonym 'Flying Officer X' and titled The Greatest People in the World and How Sleep the Brave), deserve particular attention. By the end of the war he had achieved the rank of Squadron Leader.

When does The Larkins season 2 start on ITV?

Pop and Ma Larkin celebrate sex, youth, and vitality. In each novella in the series, Pop Larkin kisses, caresses, and pinches most of the women that he encounters. Ma Larkin expects this behaviour and approves of it. When told that Pop has kissed the middle-aged Miss Pilchester, she responds, "Do her good. Make her sleep all the sweeter." His short story 'The Mill' featured as the extract in the first paper of the AQA English Language GCSE in 2019. Typically, Bates' best-known works are set in the English countryside, particularly the Midlands including his native Northamptonshire and the 'Garden of England', Kent, the setting for The Darling Buds of May. Bates was partial to taking long walks around the Northamptonshire countryside and this often provided the inspiration for his stories. His love for the countryside is exemplified in two volumes of essays, Through the Woods and Down the River. Both have been reprinted numerous times. Many of his stories depict life in the rural Midlands of England, particularly his native Northamptonshire. Bates was partial to taking long midnight walks around the Northamptonshire countryside - and this often provided the inspiration for his stories. Bates was a great lover of the countryside and its people and this is exemplified in two volumes of essays entitled Through the Woods and Down the River. I have always enjoyed British comedy and The Darling Buds of May was a comedy drama television series that aired for two years from 1991-1993. Set in Kent, where I myself lived for four years, the series followed the life of the Larkin family. It starred David Jason (from 'Only Fools and Horses' fame) as Pop Larkin, and Catherine Zeta-Jones ('The Mask of Zorro') played his eldest daughter Mariette.

The Darling Buds of May is a novella by British writer H. E. Bates published in 1958. It was the first of a series of five books about the Larkins, a rural family from Kent. The title of the book is a quote from William Shakespeare's Sonnet 18: Shall I compare thee to a summer's day? / Thou art more lovely and more temperate: / Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May, / And summer's lease hath all too short a date; [...] In 1931, he married Madge Cox, who lived two streets away from him in his native Rushden. They relocated to the village of Little Chart in Kent and bought an old granary and this together with an acre of garden they converted into a home. Bates was a keen and knowledgeable gardener who wrote many books on flowers. The Granary remained their home for the whole of their married life.Other novels followed after the war; he averaged about one novel and a collection of short stories a year, which was considered very productive at the time. These included The Feast of July and Love for Lydia. His most popular creation was the Larkin family in The Darling Buds of May. Pop Larkin and his family were inspired by a person seen in a local shop in Kent by Bates and his family when on holiday. The man (probably Wiltshire trader William Dell, also on holiday) [7] [8] had a huge wad of rubber-banded bank notes and proceeded to treat his trailer load of children with Easter eggs and ice creams. Other characters were modelled on friends and acquaintances of Bates, such as Iris Snow (a parody of Iris Murdoch) [9] and the Brigadier who was modelled on the father of John Bayley, Murdoch's husband. [9] The novel was loosely adapted into the film The Mating Game in 1959. ITV produced a television series of the novel, and its sequels plus additional original storylines, The Darling Buds of May, which ran from 1991 to 1993. A further adaptation of the novel, The Larkins, was made by ITV and broadcast in October 2021. The warmth and affection that H. E. Bates has generated through his books is so uplifting' Bradley Walsh

It became an instant classic, running for 20 episodes and launching the career of Catherine Zeta-Jones, who played the Larkin family’s eldest daughter. As they crossed from the garden to the big meadow beyond Mariette took Mr Charlton’s hand. In the startled fashion of a young colt he almost jumped as she touched him. The Darling Buds of May — starring David Jason and Pam Ferris — was one of ITV’s highest rated television comedy-drama series, winning over fans and critics alike during its three-season run.
