Mark Watts, edited transcripts, Tuttle Publishing, 1999. ISBN 0-8048-3204-8

If you have ever had an interest in Chinese Taoism, then this best rated book from Alan Watts is what I would recommend to you. It is a provocative look into humanity’s place in the natural world and how the human spirit relates to human flesh, and Watts considers this in the light of Chinese Taoism. In early 1951 Alan relocated to San Francisco, where, at Dr. Frederic Spiegelberg’s invitation, he began teaching Buddhism at the American Academy of Asian Studies (which later became the California Institute of Integral Studies). Drawing quite a crowd, his classes at the Academy soon blossomed into evening lectures open to the public and spilled over to local coffee houses frequented by Beat poets and writers.Gidlow, Elsa, Elsa: I Come with My Songs. Bootlegger Press and Druid Heights Books, San Francisco. 1986. ISBN 0-912932-12-0. On Change: The more it changes, the more it is same. Change is in some ways an illusion, for we are always at a point of uncertainty where any future can occur. Watts says humans are connected to everything around us so that we and the universe are one. The goal of Eastern thought is to tap into that oceanic feeling and love and harmony will result. This perspective he contrasts with Western thought, which is atomistic and ego-based, leading to competition, domination and conflict.

Watts, Alan (1970) Does It Matter?: Essays on Man's Relation to Materiality, Pantheon Books, ISBN 0-394-71665-5 Watts certainly has a unique way of thinking, and he believes that this Western view is what underlies human exploitation of the earth, our natural inclination towards distrusting our emotions, and our overall pandemic of loneliness and rejection of love. You won’t come across many authors who challenge the status quo the way that Alan Watts does in this highly rated book. An Authentic You that finally feels the solid ground beneath its feet again - on the day it sees its familiar and cozy world is in fact BRUTALLY DISHONEST.

Alan was a man who was familiar with and studied many religions such as Buddhism. In The Way of Zen, he wanted to show all his readers how fascinated he was with this mythical way of life for many Asian people. This is one of Alan Watts’s top books divided into two sections. He later published Myth & Ritual in Christianity (1953), an eisegesis of traditional Roman Catholic doctrine and ritual in Buddhist terms. However, the pattern was set, in that Watts did not hide his dislike for religious outlooks that he decided were dour, guilt-ridden, or militantly proselytizing—no matter if they were found within Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, or Buddhism.

Here we have a series of essays written by the great Alan Watts, representing his thoughts on one of the most astonishing problems of our time: how man relates to his material environment. The overall theme of these essays is how civilized man often confuses symbol with reality, specifically in the way that man measures the world with the world itself. He wanted to show people that there are many different ways that people understand life and live by different principles, and most important of all, that that is completely okay. Everyone who wishes should learn about new ways of life that might just change theirs for the better. That’s what he hopes to achieve with The Way of Zen, which is one of Alan Watts’s best-known books.Alan Watts does a fine job of breaking through the narcissistic wall that many of us build around ourselves, as if we have a superior, godlike ability to access a vantage point that sees a world around us, apart from us, rather than us of it, fully immersed within the Whole Everything of All Things.
