About this deal

Opened my eyes to new areas of practice and made me think about what we are currently doing on the ward and how we can improve.” work is underway to scope and develop a national autism peer education offer that will support parents and carers to access high quality learning materials across the country and provide regional training capabilities.

Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) is a lifelong condition that can affect a person's social skills, such as communication and the way they interact with other people. It is estimated that there are around 700,000 Autistic people in the UK. The aim of Autism Acceptance Week (formerly known as Autism Awareness Week) is to help more people understand what autism is, as well as the ways it can affect life for Autistic people. Autism Acceptance Week is also a fantastic opportunity to raise awareness and acceptance of autism both in and outside your school. NHS England has funded a research project being undertaken by Dr Teresa Tavassoli at the University of Reading into development and evaluation of a sensory assessment app for use when a person is admitted to a mental health hospital. The aims of the project are to: The online 2022 edition has been comprehensively rewritten to pay more attention to the importance of creating an accessible environment for people with sensory differences, to offer a choice of survey questions and to create an online analysis option for teams to control themselves. True, some people profit more from these best practices (like, deaf people from an audio transcript) - but is it hard to understand that I, as a non-deaf person, also prefer to read a transcript to listening to the audio file (not to mention that I can use search on it). And the same is true for almost all aspects of accessibility (I also don't enjoy reading if the colour contrast is wrong, etc.)

The team

Children can develop low self-esteem. Autism Awareness and Acceptance Week is the perfect opportunity to uplift them and help them to boost their confidence. Let us flip all the negatives into positives and remember the empowering blessings of spontaneity, hyperfocus, creativity, and unconventional thinking… to name a few. We want to celebrate your wonderful child and YOU! And this beautifully designed Autism Acrostic Poem Poster can help us do that. Autism stands for: The app will reduce considerably the constraints of most existing assessments that require specialists and additional equipment It aims to provide the community with an easily accessible, free sensory measure. Not all Autistic children go to specialist schools, meaning that anyone who works in an education setting would benefit from improved understanding of autism. It would also help for other parents to gain a better understanding so that they can help support their children's peers about Autism. While this is true, the aim of the posters is to raise awareness of various conditions through good design practice. We need to be mindful of not just designing or building for our own immediate needs. For example, consider designing for keyboard use only. This is particularly helpful for users with motor disabilities where using the mouse can be quite difficult, especially with precise movements, whereas keyboard use is much easier.

Assess everyone’s sensory need on admission and consider how sensory need will be accommodated and supported in care plans. Make decisions in relation to individuals, involving the person (and their family, as appropriate) wherever possible. The Autism Group offers support and social opportunities for young people on the autism spectrum (specifically in the secondary school and above age group). It also offers autism training for parents, carers and people living and working in the Thames Valley area. The team is based near Maidenhead. Afterwards, you can gain a better understanding of how people can support those with autism. Key facts are shown in a variety of bright colours, hence being more eye-catching and engaging when on display. When everything becomes too much for an autistic person, they can go into meltdown or shutdown. These are very intense and exhausting experiences. As well as the areas outlined above, many children and young people with autism will have difficulties with fine and gross motor co-ordination and organisational skills. They can also be affected by sensory sensitivities (sensitivities to noise, lights, smells, etc). They also tend to experience higher levels of anxiety; this can have a significant effect on their behaviour so the impact of anxiety on daily life shouldn’t be underestimated. Autism in girls If you liked this poster, then why not get creative in class and encourage children to explore their own Autism Awareness display poster ideas? Use our poster as inspiration to create a whole Autism awareness display board in your classroom. Perhaps children can create a poster for each one of the statements included in our poster, making multiple larger posters featuring designs by your students.

Lifelong and persistent sensory sensitivities are a diagnostic characteristic of autism. Recent studies suggest prevalence in between 69% to 90% of autistic people. [i], [ii] Autism Awareness Day is on the 2nd of April each year. It's a time when we can shine a light on Autism and how we can support Autistic learners, both in the classroom and in society. To get involved in Autism Awareness Day, you might: We are encouraging services to undertake an audit for themselves with the support of commissioners. Services can complete a form with a team code, which will provide a report summarising data from their team to facilitate a development plan. As part of care planning, support people to do the things that help them to self-regulate, including repeated movement (‘stimming’), access to hobbies and favourite possessions, quiet spaces, outdoor space, and access to items such as noise cancelling headphones, caps, blankets, etc. follow a linear, logical layout -and ensure text flows and is visible when text is magnified to 200%You can also find all of Twinkl's autism resources right here. All of them are made by SEND specialists, so you can be sure that they'll fully support your teaching on the subject of autism.

Pupils watch a video about autism in which a young man explains 5 things he thinks people need to know about autism and 5 things people can do to help people with autism. Pupils are asked to discuss the five things that the person felt people needed to know about autism and five ways that people can help. Pupils then complete a worksheet. Just a thought, although there are some common issues within the different user groups, people are individuals, so I think the ability to personalise is what will truly enable accessibility. A refresh of the Green Light Toolkit was commissioned in 2022 by the NHS England Autism team as part of the NHS Long Term Plan commitment to improve care for autistic people. The refresh has been co-produced and led by Peter Bates, at the National Development team for Inclusion.

International

Overall, there were 545 people trained who have disseminated the training to their services and teams. Of these, 90 have lived experience, with the remaining trainers working within mental health settings. Just under half (240) were to support CAMHS inpatient settings, and 305 were to support adult mental health inpatient settings. Time to celebrate all the amazing qualities and characteristics Autistic people have. Our Autism Acrostic Poem Poster is a lovely display resource, perfect for Autism Awareness and Acceptance Week (March 29, 2023 - April 4, 2023) .
