Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) is a lifelong condition that can affect a person's social skills, such as communication and the way they interact with other people. It is estimated that there are around 700,000 Autistic people in the UK. The aim of Autism Acceptance Week (formerly known as Autism Awareness Week) is to help more people understand what autism is, as well as the ways it can affect life for Autistic people. Autism Acceptance Week is also a fantastic opportunity to raise awareness and acceptance of autism both in and outside your school. NHS England has funded a research project being undertaken by Dr Teresa Tavassoli at the University of Reading into development and evaluation of a sensory assessment app for use when a person is admitted to a mental health hospital. The aims of the project are to: The online 2022 edition has been comprehensively rewritten to pay more attention to the importance of creating an accessible environment for people with sensory differences, to offer a choice of survey questions and to create an online analysis option for teams to control themselves. True, some people profit more from these best practices (like, deaf people from an audio transcript) - but is it hard to understand that I, as a non-deaf person, also prefer to read a transcript to listening to the audio file (not to mention that I can use search on it). And the same is true for almost all aspects of accessibility (I also don't enjoy reading if the colour contrast is wrong, etc.)

Lifelong and persistent sensory sensitivities are a diagnostic characteristic of autism. Recent studies suggest prevalence in between 69% to 90% of autistic people. Services can complete a form with a team code, which will provide a report summarising data from their team to facilitate a development plan. Pupils watch a video about autism in which a young man explains 5 things he thinks people need to know about autism and 5 things people can do to help people with autism. Pupils are asked to discuss the five things that the person felt people needed to know about autism and five ways that people can help. Pupils then complete a worksheet. Just a thought, although there are some common issues within the different user groups, people are individuals, so I think the ability to personalise is what will truly enable accessibility. A refresh of the Green Light Toolkit was commissioned in 2022 by the NHS England Autism team as part of the NHS Long Term Plan commitment to improve care for autistic people. The refresh has been co-produced and led by Peter Bates, at the National Development team for Inclusion.

Overall, there were 545 people trained who have disseminated the training to their services and teams. Of these, 90 have lived experience, with the remaining trainers working within mental health settings. Just under half (240) were to support CAMHS inpatient settings, and 305 were to support adult mental health inpatient settings.
