About this deal

Comparing the headline specs of camera phones can be a useful way of getting a sense of how they perform, and which ones might be better than others. Digital photography enthusiasts may gravitate towards comparing camera resolution (megapixels or MP for short), however this often doesn’t tell the whole story. If you’d like one of the newest Samsung phones, but don’t want to spend top dollar, then the Samsung Galaxy S23 offers a compelling option, but with three rear cameras, is considerably cheaper. Samsung never made its own DSLR system, instead re-badging Pentax bodies and lenses. While a Samsung adapter is available to use these (and other) K-mount lenses on NX cameras (the ED-MA9NXK), it’s not exactly easy to find. Offering manual-focus only and a hit-and-miss mechanical aperture control dial, it also brings no obvious advantage over cheaper third-party options.

Start with the wide-angle lens and move close to your subject, the Focus Enhancer icon – two yellow circles – will appear on the lower left side of the screen. The S22 Ultra detects when you’re in macro and automatically adjusts the focus and focal length. Focus Enhancer can be deactivated, but you lose the ability to focus close to the subject. This seems petty, but with macro photos you need more light than a typical image, so casting shadows can make things much more difficult. For those who would like to give it a go, but prefer not to invest in a niche bit of kit, there’s always the option of using your smartphone. Videography can be an expensive game to get into it after you've added up the cost of the best camera for video, the best cine lenses, and all the accessories you might need. However, smartphone lenses are getting so good these days you no longer have to spend an insane amount of money to invest in a kit that will help you shoot professional-looking films.

This is a good example of what to expect with the Enhanced Focus mode. Shot from just a few centimeters away from the leaf, the fish-eye effect brings the veins into focus at a specific central point, leaving other parts out of focus or shrouded in some pleasing natural bokeh. The colors, balance, and dynamic range are all excellent. Snowflake Andy Boxall/Digital TrendsWith a new 48MP sensor as part of its camera array, the iPhone 14 Pro reliably produces excellent images, and specialist modes like Macro and Portrait help out the user in various different shooting situations. It’s already pricey, though if you have the budget you can go for the larger iPhone 14 Pro Max. This model has an identical camera array, just a larger display. The Apexel Macro Lens Kit is more user-friendly than the microscope adaptor, at least to me, and Dennis agrees. Not long ago, clip-on macro lenses and loupes for smartphones were available to buy. These tended to be fairly low in quality, fiddly to use and, since they were usually specific to a phone model, were out of date as soon as you upgraded your device. In recent years, flagships and even mid-range phones have come equipped with macro functionality directly in camera. It’s even become a key selling point for many. The JoPree Cell Phone Camera Lens Kit might come in as last on our list, but it’s certainly not the least. This is still a quality lens kit, and the lenses are supposed to be of DSLR camera quality, so you know you’re getting something professional here. It’s actually a fairly unique kit because you get four high quality lenses inside of it — not a handful of lenses with less than desirable construction. If you already use a lot of Apple products like MacBooks then an iPhone will integrate better into your system. However, Android phones offer a lot more choice and flexibility with third-party apps. These days, Android phones from market leaders like Google and Samsung have some of the best cameras in the business.

Xiaomi’s latest flagship, the 13 Pro, has lenses which are co-engineered with Leica. You get a 50MP, 1inch main sensor/lens, as well as an ultra-wide-angle and a zoom lens (50MP). When the phone detects that you are close to a subject, it will automatically switch to the ultra-wide camera and record in close-focusing mode. Some form of close up framing is also available in other modes, and in Pro mode or using the Expert RAW app – with the ultra wide-angle camera/lens -, you can get REALLY close and have full control over exposure, and if you’re into precision work, manually adjustable focus distance. Besides, you can also play with the longest telephoto and its shortest focusing distance (the 230mm focus at 45cm, so that should give you an idea of the potential) to create some close up images that, now, are mostly reserved to owners of the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra. This includes a 4X telephoto lens to significantly enhance objects in your photo. The fisheye lens, as well as the CPL lens, are exciting tools to try out for the first time. The company mentions that all its lenses come with finely processed glass to provide the best results to the customers.

It Requires Steadier Hands Than Mine

For maximum flexibility, shooting in raw (+JPEG/HEIF simultaneously, usually) gives you scope to edit your smartphone macro shots after the fact, or by using apps such as Snapseed. Not all smartphones offer the ability to shoot raw and macro at the same time. 3. Experiment with digital filters
