About this deal

Her honours and awards included a CBE and Gold Medal of the Royal Philharmonic Society; the Kathleen Ferrier Award (which first took place in 1956, and grew out of the Kathleen Ferrier Memorial Scholarship Fund, set up to support young singers) remains one of the most prestigious annual singing-competitions in the classical world. In superb recorded sound, this discovery is a real treasure and completes the recordings available of the three works in which Ferrier sang at the 1950 Vienna Bach Festival. Viele gelten bis heute als Referenzeinspielungen – ihre einzigartige Stimme gilt seit Ferriers frühem Tod im Jahre 1953, im Alter von nur 41 Jahren, bis heute unerreichbar. For CDs Grading does not include Jewel case as these are replaceable - however any badly damaged Jewel cases will be replaced.

It is rare in our experience that items go missing entirely, but occasionally they are delayed by a few days. Certain items can take longer to source than the estimated week, particularly during busy trading periods and may take longer to arrive at our warehouse. what was quite astonishing was that of all the 15 soloists taking part [she] was the only non-native German speaker…. Decca has released a centenary edition with 14 CDs, as well as a new film, directed by Diane Perelsztejn and narrated by the English actress Charlotte Rampling, that explores the life and legacy of Ferrier, who died at 41 from cancer.

In the same year, EMI issued a 3-CD set (Kathleen Ferrier - The Complete EMI Recordings) comprising all her extant recordings for that company plus two previously unissued takes from the 1949 'Kindertotenlieder' and a complete recording of Gluck's 'Orfeo ed Euridice', to which they had the rights. Seventy years on the sharply focused playing and choral singing still impress… [Ferrier] comes into her own, though, in No 11, where she’s truly magnificent: her central aria, imploring the risen Christ to ‘tarry yet’ on earth, remains one of the most beautiful things she ever committed to disc. The three Bach additions culminate in ‘Bist du bei mir’ which, given Ferrier’s cruelly premature demise, lingers as long in the memory as the final repetitions – for ever …and ever. The music is sung with all the passion and tenderness we have come to expect from that glorious contralto voice, confirming Our Kaff’s reputation as a warm-hearted, vivacious, modest and courageous woman with a wicked sense of humour.

So it seems amazing that, after so long, a treasury of previously unpublished and little-circulated BBC broadcasts is now being released. The CD catalogue number is SOMM Ariadne 5004 and it also features Irmgard Seefried and Friedl Riegler (sopranos), Hugo Meyer-Welfing (tenor) and Otto Edelmann (bass). From the same venue and period, Jacques and the Cantata Singers offer a bewitching encore in the sublime Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring. The other source is the remarkable collection of Kenneth Leech, a composer and engineer who, from the 1930s to the 1950s, recorded numerous broadcasts, mainly using Bakelite and metal discs – the usual way for an enthusiast to preserve radio programmes at that time. This is grand-manner Bach…Playing and choral singing are both enthusiastic… Irmgard Seefried, singing second soprano, is, as one might expect, glorious.Several are from the BBC’s own archives and include Ferrier’s first broadcast of Rubbra’s Three Psalms Op. Apart from her studio recordings, many of her live performances and broadcast recitals were recorded, sometimes privately.

SOMM RECORDINGS is proud to announce the release of Kathleen Ferrier: In Celebration of Bach, a collection of historic performances with Britain’s favourite classical singer of the 20th century very much the star attraction.

So we can hear her sing Lieder by Schubert and Brahms and songs by Stanford and Jacobson which have never before been issued. Please remember it can take some time for Paypal or your card issuer to process and post the refund. These recorded performances are immensely valuable, as they allow us, so many years later, to hear several songs that Ferrier never set down commercially – including Brahms’ Nachtigall – as well as others that can be now compared with their commercially-made counterparts.
