About this deal

One interesting thing to note is that when the Sigma and Tamron lenses framed our test chart identically at the 200mm mark, the Sigma lens was actually 2.36" (.72m) further away from the chart, indicating that it provides a slightly more telephoto view at 200mm.

There's a general downturn at 135mm. At f/2.8 we see 2,981 lines, which is a good result for a high-resolution sensor. Image quality holds steady right around 3,100 lines at f/4 through f/8, and peaks at f/11 (3,382 lines). There's a slight dip in clarity at f/16 (3,210 lines) and a more apparent one at f/22 (2,905 lines).

Focal Length Range

Processing was done in Lightroom 4.3 from RAW at camera standard settings. Noise-reduction is set to 0, sharpening to 70/0.5/36/10, with no extra tone, color, or saturation-adjustment. White-balance was adjusted to a neutral white and I did some exposure compensation to make the brightness match. CA-removal is ON .

is heavier (63.5 vs. 53.0 oz, 1800 vs. 1500g w/ tripod ring), has a larger diameter (3.71 vs. 3.48", 94.2 vs. 88.5mm), takes larger filters (82mm vs. 77mm) and features slightly shorter focus and zoom ring rotations. As hinted to, images captured with APS-C format cameras do not show shading nearly as readily and the barely-recognizable close-to-1-stop of shading in 200mm corners is essentially the only consideration in this regard. This is the same motor type that has been implemented in all of the Sigma Art and Sports series lenses to date. Autofocus speed is a little on the slow side, compared to Canon USM lenses. This lens could also benefit from a focus limiter (which many 70-200 zooms have). But this is a reasonable issue, given the price of the lens.

Motivation

With this lens, people can be photographed in the home, in the yard, at the beach, at the park, in the studio or at a wide variety of events and venues. As of this writing in late November, 2006, we've tested only two other lenses having the same focal length range as this one, only one of which shared its f/2.8 maximum aperture. We can thus make only limited comparisons between this model and others on the market, but hope to flesh out our test data in this focal length range more in the future. From 70-135mm, chromatic aberration was quite low, and extremely low in the vicinity of 100mm. It gets quite a bit worse at 200mm, but the average level actually wasn't too bad, as long as we stayed below f/16.

That all four have three positions means that a bit more attention is required, especially when the center position is desired. There is very little additional lateral CA with the 1.4x, though what is there is slightly more-blurred, making it appear slightly larger. The 70-200mm f/2.8 lens class is an extremely-popular one with the full range of photographers, from beginners to professionals, finding such a lens to be an invaluable part of their kits. If all of the wavelengths of light in the visible spectrum refracted identically, a lens designer's job would be a lot easier.

The Sigma 70-200 mm F2.8 DG OS HSM Sport Nikon is one of the Sigma Global Vision Line lenses that are eagerly awaited. It is the new flagship, a telephoto zoom lens with large aperture that meets the most stringent requirements of professional photographers. The magnesium lens body is both robust and lightweight, which increases the portability. The dust and splash-proof construction, together with the water and oil repellent coating on the front element, guarantees that the lens can be safely used in the most challenging conditions. It also includes an intelligent control system with an acceleration sensor and the latest algorithm that can be panned in all directions. The semi-rigid plastic Sigma LH914-01 Lens Hood is a moderately large, petal-shaped hood that provides significant protection to the front lens element from flare-inducing light, from impact, and from dust and moisture. The Nikon mount version of this lens includes an electromagnetic diaphragm mechanism. Functionality may be limited on some camera bodies. Sigma 70-200mm 1:2.8 EX DG OS HSM Review

From the charts I’d expect the lens to perform on a pretty high level regarding overall contrast but with limited sharpness at the short end outside the DX image-circle. Astigmatism seems well controlled. But let’s see how this theoretical performance translates into real life results in the sharpness test based on Siemens-stars. As already noted, the biggest lens manufacturers all have 70-200mm f/2.8 lens models in their lineups. For those with Nikon-based kits, comparing the Sigma 70-200 Sports to the Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8E AF-S FL VR Lens makes the most sense. The Nikon mount version of this lens includes an electromagnetic diaphragm mechanism that allows it to receive the appropriate signals from the camera body. This feature ensures precision diaphragm control and stable Auto Exposure (AE) performance during continuous shooting. Ideal is that the foot comes with an integrated Arca-style lens plate dovetail with two safety stop screws included. That the focus ring does not smoothly transition into the barrel section in front of it seems like a missed opportunity. The Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 Di VC USD G2 Lens, another third-party offering, will be an attractive option for those interested in the Sigma 70-200 Sports lens. Weight: 1,430 g (50.4 oz.) vs. 1,540 g (3.4 lb.) of the Nikon. Together with a full frame body you’ll be schlepping 2.3kg around. [0] Because they do not, we get aberrations caused by various wavelengths of light being magnified and focused differently.
