When whalers left the coast of Whitby, the local fishermen became acquired to the taste of Jenever, a spirit introduced to them by the Dutch specialists to keep them warm out at sea. With the gin prohibition in full swing on land, the Whitby fishermen smuggled the ingredients ashore to keep the spirit alive, and now Whitby Distillery are bringing us our very own Jenever. Tyne Bank Brewery & Tap Room was founded by Julia Austin in 2011. Inspired by the different brewery in the West Coast of America, she decided to create her own distillery to brew beers and craft ales. Offering a wide array of beers with different taste and strength, you can certainly find the best one that will suit your distinct taste and style. They offer different beers that are available either in bottles, cans, casks and taps. They say: “A nice warm savoury combination of pink peppercorns and celery seed rounded by a mix of traditional gin flavours like angelica and coriander, with late hints of cardamom. and 20ml sugar syrup, then strain into a highball glass over ice. Top up with soda and garnish with fresh grapefruit wedge and a sprig of tarragon. Fill a glass with lots of chunky ice and add 50ml of Whitby Gin. Pair with 150ml of Mediterranean Fever-Tree tonic and garnish with pink grapefruit and a sprig of rosemary.

It’s been 37℃ this week so this went down like pop. I finished it with lemon but I do think even harsher pink grapefruit would have been great. Like this a lot! Mostly citrus for me, definitely pink grapefruit, it is peppery with juniper and coriander. Bittersweet and a not too hot alcohol finish. Great tonic always helps of course, this Lixir was ideal.
