As the axe drops, Thomas Cromwell emerges from the bloodbath to continue his climb to power and wealth, while his formidable master, Henry, settles to short-lived happiness with his third queen, Jane Seymour.

Nicholas Elliott (1916-1994) was a British intelligence agent who went to Beirut in January 1963 to confront his longtime friend Kim Philby with evidence that Philby was a Soviet spy. Seriously, how many times do you need to travel to see a musician in action to qualify as a groupie? The opening chapters of this always entertaining book contain an affectionate and amusing portrait of Sir Claude, both at Cambridge and at Eton, together with an account of his role as chairman of the Everest Committee in the contentious matter of the leadership of the successful expedition of 1953.

This won attention not so much for its content, mainly family reminiscences, but for its omissions-notably under Foreign Office instructions all references to MI6" Sunday Times obituary,March 1994 laid in. Here he mentions that Philby said in interviews that he was content with his life in Moscow, but Elliott is bitter about his former friend: "He certainly did not deserve contentment from the day over fifty years ago on which he decided to betray his friends, his family and his country for a creed that is now universally discredited. My only minor niggle is that a cd that is in a cardboard sleeve maybe could do with being sent out in sturdier packaging.I’m looking forward to getting out there and playing the songs I’ve written and been recording for my debut album. This at least the second time I have read this book which is very well written, interesting and very modest about all Nicholas Elliott achieved - not much about his involvement with Philby etc but that is rather typical of the man - and the book was probably written while he was bound by the official secrets act. INSCRIBED on the half title: "For my friend Bob / with affection and admiration / Nicholas Elliott / August '93.
