Browne is known for his gorilla/monkeys theme in many of his books, and the illustrations in this one were powerful and engaging. This fantastical picture book from 2009-2011 Children's Laureate and Hans Christian Andersen Award winner Anthony Browne is a warm and sensitive story.

However on the eve of her birthday something peculiar happens… She awakens to discover a gigantic gorilla at the end of her bed! As is the case in all of Browne’s books, the illustrations contain surreal details which reward the reader for lingering.

Within the first part of the story Browne explores Hannah’s feelings of disappointment, loneliness and loss but the second part of the story is very magical and the reader is transported into an enchanted journey of happiness and love. This was charming book of a young girl who loved all things gorilla and wanted little more than to see one in person.The gorilla in the story becomes a father figure to hannah which is shown through animations and the similarity between activities. It could also be used as a prop for close examinations of the 'gorilla-fied' details in the pictures as part of an art history lesson. Mexico, Venezuela, Colombia, France, Korea, Italy, Germany, Holland, Japan, and Taiwan, and I’ve had the pleasure of visiting these places and working with local children and meeting other illustrators. They explore the features of information texts using Hamilton Group Reader, Nana, what's an information text? This picture has subtle things to say about parent/child relationships, and each revisit reveals new things previously unspotted in the illustrations.
