About this deal

We have decided not to include any music production workstations such as NI's Maschine+, Roland's Verselab MV-1 and Akai MPC Live II. While they include some MIDI control, their focus is more as hardware DAWs for complete song production. The pads can be used to trigger MIDI drums, melodies, or effects. Six control knobs are also provided which, when combined with the three control levels, takes this to the equivalent of 18 and gives you a huge amount of scope to adjust your sound. Controls go hand-hand with the interface, and higher-quality MIDI drum pads have more control knobs to utilize. The control mode allows you to play sounds from an external device, while support for a huge range of digital audio workstations is also available.

All the buttons on Beatpad’s grid-like interface correspond to a key on your keyboard. Once you’ve loaded some beats, you can play said beats by simply pressing the corresponding key. Go the Settings menu to see how the keys are assigned or, better yet, enable Practice Mode and the interface will clearly display what key you have to press to play a certain beat. Korg's SQ-64 is – let’s make no mistake – a sequencer first and foremost, with some MIDI control and lots of connectivity including eight CV outs. In fact it is four sequencers in one: three melodic, with outputs for pitch, mod and gate, and one for drum patterns. Melodic sequencing includes various methods and scale modes – everything is catered for – and drum sequencing is easy, straightforward and dependable with no learning curve. The main grid of buttons is used for a whole multitude of tasks, from song selection, then pattern selection to step selection among others and there are dedicated buttons for mod, pitch and gate channels to keep things nice and simple. It features 16 velocity and pressure sensitive finger drum pads, along with eight pad banks, giving you a total of 128 different sounds. The X in the name of this third-gen Launchpad marks a decade since Novation’s original 8x8 pad controller hit the market. There’s no doubt that, in that time, the Launchpad has proved hugely influential, inspiring the design of many other clip-launching MIDI controllers, providing the centrepiece of countless electronic live shows and founding a whole genre of YouTube mashup videos. The unit can be ‘played’ like a keyboard although it’s not as intuitive as it could be. For other MIDI (control and otherwise) options, the global button allows you to set various aspects of the device so it fits with the rest of your gear, including things like 5 or 10 volts for pitch output, CC control mapping and the like. And as SQ-64 doesn’t just output to CV but also to MIDI, it is open to any gear you might care to mention, including hooking up to your DAW to sequence software instruments. On top of this, you are also able to add your own custom samples to the collection by connecting an external device via a USB cable, or by inserting an SD card. The music pad comes with 4GB of internal storage, as well as a range of pre-installed samples and loops, which have been created by top sound designers. Finally, for those looking for a top-of-the-rage option, with as many features as possible, capable of professional use, a great choice when searching for the best MIDI drum pad is the Ableton Push 2. These give you extensive control over the sounds and beats that you can make. You can use the effects that come with the drum pad, or you can assign functions to those control knobs from the DAW you’re using. The more money you spend on a MIDI drum pad, the more in-depth the interface will be. Higher-priced pads have dozens of pads to use, whereas mid-range drum pads typically have up to 16 pads on their interface. Controls

Some premium drum MIDI pads even have touch sliders that allow you to pitch bend. Those are common on MIDI keyboard controllers, but you’ll only find them on higher-priced MIDI drum pad controllers. ExpandabilityMIDI drum pads are a lot more fun to use to record beats when making music. Without a MIDI drum controller, you’d need to use your mouse and keyboard to create beats. However, some MIDI drum pad controllers are more optimized for certain DAWs than others. For example, the Ableton Push 2 was designed with Ableton Live in mind. All its features and settings work best when integrated within Ableton. Plug'n'Play: Simply connect to to your iPad / Android device and start mixing your MP3 files from the music libary Affordable MIDI drum controllers have fewer editing features and less refined sounds. A budget drum pad might be a better choice if you’re simply looking for something to play beats with. If you want an extensive range of features, you’ll need to invest in a higher-quality MIDI drum pad with better sonic capabilities. Brands

Push – a standalone expressive instrument | Ableton

For Ableton Live control, nothing still beats Ableton's own Push 2, which has simply been designed with nothing more than Live in mind so its control focus with that software is second to none and it has become the perfect hardware extension of it.

If a MIDI pad controller doesn’t come with software, make sure that it has onboard sounds to use without needing to be plugged into a DAW. Not only is it smaller and sleeker looking (though with larger pads) but it also adds velocity sensitivity, previously available only on the Launchpad Pro.
