About this deal

A few years ago, our friend Chrissy wrote about how Animal Upon Animal teaches physics; kids will start to place an animal, then stop and think about other ways to place it that might work better. Content: 29 wooden animals (1 crocodile, 4 flamingos, 4 monkeys, 4 toucans, 4 snakes, 4 camels, 4 sheep, 4 tortoises), 1 die with symbols, set of game instructions. Along with enjoying the games components through Free Play, there are three ways to play Animal Upon Animal Junior.

Margot and Harry (2 and 4) love to get this out and free play, making up their own little game and/or story together. All of that said, a bit less randomness might make it more my speed (I’d love, for instance, rolling to determine how you place the animal, rather than how many animals or which animal you place), but also, not every game is designed for me personally, so, whatever.

All of these educational elements will be undertones and unbeknownst to the players they are learning as they play. Please note these are estimated transit times and are based on deliveries between major gateway cities. It’s a bit more about managing weight than playing with interesting physics, which is always my favorite part of stacking games. Most people suspect the snake is the foulest to play, but it’s mostly flat, just bendy in unexpected places (it can nicely sit on top of another snake, for instance).

Who will position the penguin on top of the crocodile, the sheep on top of the penguin, the serpent on the sheep, the tucan . Often, being able to place two animals is a pretty significant boon, so it’s kind of frustrating when it’s randomly determined. We did start to use the variation rules which ask you to use all remaining animals (so you then have 14 each instead of 7) but even the 2-player version with these rules is still not much fun. When Rowan was about 2 to 2 ½ we moved on to adding the die to the game and explaining to him what to do with each die roll. There’s about all there is to this game in terms of rules, but its simplicity and sheer charm is bound to keep you coming back to it, however old you are!

On your turn, you roll a die to determine which action you must take: will it be adding one or more animals to the pyramid in the middle, or will you get lucky and be able to offload one of your pieces onto someone else or place it on the table to extend the base? Within a couple of months he went from only being able to stack one animal directly on top of another to building a tower of animals manipulating the orientation to keep the tower standing. The last thing to highlight is that Animal Upon Animal components are awesome and the very definition of kid friendly (did you see the smiles on the animals). For example, my 5 and 8-year old taught their grandparents to play under 5 minutes and were able to answer their questions throughout as they played.

Stars – A fun dexterity game that will help all players of all ages learn or sharpen their stacking and placement skills. Each turn a player rolls the die and either places one or two animals on to the stack of animals, passes one of his or her animals to another player for them to place, or places an animal on the table, extending the base for other players to build upon. The set up time in the game last as long as it takes to place the alligator in the center of the table and hand all the players their set of animals.

Animal Upon Animal Junior keeps the DNA of its big brother without dumbing the game down or making it less fun. I thought it was the type of game that would be quickly outgrown, but Elliot is showing me otherwise. While I don’t think Animal Upon Animal is a great 2-player game, I do think it’s a great game that excels at kids having fun while they learn. Elliot] I expected it to be like the other Junior HABA games – the My Very First Games – where it’s like the original game, just the pieces are bigger, so it’s easier for littler kids.
