About this deal

In Tokaido, the players take on the roles of ancient travelers, following the historic Tokaido road throughout Japan, from Kyoto to Edo (Tokyo). Their goal is simply to have the most rewarding experiences along the way, by making stops that let them collect souvenirs, relax in hot springs, encounter interesting characters, take in amazing panoramic views, donate to temples, and sample the local cuisine. Several of the actions the players may take involve some sort of set collection, presented in different ways. Once all of the travelers arrive at the final destination on the road (the inn in Edo), the game is over; the player with the most experience points is the winner. Game Components: Tokaido comes with many well-made components, including unique characters for each player to choose from. In the early 1980s, inspired by Hiroshige, American artist Bill Zacha travelled the Tokaido stations. He created a series of 55 serigraphs, each depicting one stop along the Tokaido way, and printed 100 copies of each design. These were collected in the 1985 book Tokaido Journey, along with Zacha's recollections (in both English and Japanese) of travelling the road and the people he encountered. [10] Timeless Gameplay: Tokaido’s gameplay is a blend of strategy and relaxation, allowing players to savor every moment of their journey. Make choices about where to visit, what to collect, and who to meet, all while taking in the breathtaking scenery. There is one other area that has not been mentioned on the board. The farm. However, whilst this area does not broaden your mind, it does allow you to receive three coins to help pay for the meals and items from the village. To make matters worse, the first traveller to reach the inn is the last traveller to leave, meaning that your fellow travellers may ruin your perfectly thought out strategy if you are left with no option but to be the first traveller to reach the Inn. Each meal costs between 1-3 coins and is worth six points. However, once you have eaten a meal, you cannot select it again at another Inn.

The Deluxe Edition of Tokaido brings an even bigger game board representing how the journey down the East Sea Road has expanded. This means an even bigger box, which will become a comfortable home for the Tokaido expansion, Crossroads too. Crossroads provides new experiences including bathhouses and cherry blossom trees to fill the journey up with more magic and beauty. Players will find their character tiles, unpainted minis and resources all tied up in an updated and modernised set. Shodo & Emaki - For 1 coin, gain 1 point for each Souvenir or Legendary Object. Gain 1 point for each Souvenir thereafter.Play anywhere, solo, with two, or with the whole world -------------------------------------------- In 2012, a board game called Tokaido, designed by Antoine Bauza, was published by Funforge. [12] In the game, players compete against one another to travel the Tōkaidō from Kyoto to Edo. Funforge developed a digital edition of the game, published in 2017.

The social status of a person is indicated by the manner in which he travels. The daimyo and people of the upper-class travel in norimono, which are roomy enough to allow for a fair amount of ease, and are comfortably furnished. The sides can be opened or closed at will, as a protection against the weather. The length of the pole proclaims the rank of the passenger; if a nobleman, a long pole borne by five or six men at each end; a person of lower rank, a shorter pole and only four carriers. If the occupant is a prince of the royal family, the pole rests on the palms of the hands, otherwise it is borne on the shoulders. Humble individuals have to be satisfied with a kago carried by two porters, which entails a very cramped position. In steep mountain regions everyone, whatever their rank, is obliged to use a kago. Once they have moved their Traveler, the player receives the benefit corresponding to this type of space. Traganeou, Jilly. 2004. There is some variability – there are several travelers, each with his own bonus or special ability. One can buy meals cheaper, the other starts with more money and so on. Tokaido 5th Anniversary Edition includes a new box artwork, new cards design, new player boards, a redesigned game board, new meeples, new panorama cards, etc. Gameplay remains the same and this edition doesn't include Crossroads or Matsuri. Featuring the same award-winning gameplay Tokaido is known for, this face lift to the already stunning game makes it even more striking than ever before with cleaner designs, new art, and more. The first time I read through the game rules, I have to say that I wasn’t too impressed. But even though the rules are simple, and you aren’t supposed to be doing much more than moving along the road peacefully and taking whatever actions you come upon, there is still a good amount of strategy needed if you want to become the winning Zen master. First and foremost is the movement rule, with the player in last place being able to take the next turn. Discover the digital adaptation of Tokaido, the boardgame phenomenon that has already sold more than 350,000 copies worldwide, and has been translated into 16 languages!
