As fears abated, the young refugees went into Abergele with increasing confidence and often alone, especially when farmers had offered them cash backhanders for their work and once the castle leadership had established a kitty to provide some spending money. In this intriguing debut, Andrew Hesketh explores the lesser-told history of the children who lived in this North Wales castle, bringing together their personal memories and experiences to create a unique picture of their lives. Lesser known is that, at the beginning of the Second World War, this once-grand country house in North Wales became home to around two hundred Jewish refugee children who had been rescued from Europe on the Kindertransport. Gwrych Castle, where a Hachshara was being set up: a residential 'training centre' aimed at preparing the Jewish children for life on a kibbutz in Israel, where they hoped to be reunited with their families. Prof Abrams said that the young people were being prepared for life in Israel during their time at the castle, receiving Zionist education along with their agricultural training.Escape to Gwrych Castle, based heavily on the memories and words of the children who were there, also charts how the young refugees gained confidence in other ways.

Rabbi Sperber initiated educational programmes that focused heavily on developing the children’s religious knowledge and understanding. The Gwrych Castle hachshara opened in late August 1939, just days before the Second World War began. They were taught how to live on a kibbutz (a community traditionally based on agriculture), so they would have been taught how to farm and how to live an agricultural life during their time there.The Gothic Bedroom is suitable for up to two people, and is a self-contained one bedroom property with its own shower room.
