The chemicals in treated water are not good for mangosteen seeds.

Hardy to zones 11 and 12, mangosteen thrives in full sun when mature. You need to be able to provide part shade during the hottest parts of the day in the first two to three years after planting outside. You can use shade tarps or even a patio umbrella to do this. Mangosteen is easy to prepare and eat — though it may be difficult to find depending on where you live. The fruit’s season is relatively short, which often limits its availability.

Mangosteen have also been proven to have some medicinal value, not only as a food stuff, but as in ingredient in other products. For example, there is a popular Thai soap, made from Mangosteen, that is used to treat several skin infections. Also, a tea is often made from the Mangosteen, which is good for treating diarrhoea and other stomach upsets. Other tests show that the Mangosteen may also have anti-fungal and anti-cancer properties as well. Deep loamy, sandy soil is a must and you have to dig in well-rotted manure and quality compost when prepping the bed.

Disclaimer

The juvenile mangosteen fruit, which does not require fertilisation to form (see agamospermy), first appears as pale green or almost white in the shade of the canopy. As the fruit enlarges over the next two to three months, the exocarp colour deepens to darker green. During this period, the fruit increases in size until its exocarp is 2 + 1⁄ 2–3in) in outside diameter, remaining hard until a final, abrupt ripening stage. [ citation needed] The fruit of the mangosteen is sweet and tangy, juicy, somewhat fibrous, with fluid-filled vesicles ( like the flesh of citrus fruits), with an inedible, deep reddish-purple colored rind ( exocarp) when ripe. [3] [5] In each fruit, the fragrant edible flesh that surrounds each seed is botanically endocarp, i.e., the inner layer of the ovary. [7] [8] The seeds are of similar size and shape to almonds. If you happen to score a fresh supply, choose fruits with a smooth, dark purple outer rind. The rind is inedible but can be easily removed with a serrated knife. a b c d e f g Yaacob O, Tindall HD (1995). Mangosteen cultivation. Rome: Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. Heart health. Animal studies show that mangosteen extract effectively reduced heart disease risk factors like LDL (bad) cholesterol and triglycerides while increasing HDL (good) cholesterol ( 24, 25, 26). Although the mangosteen is native to South East Asia, it is now becoming more widely available in other parts of the world, including the UK. With its intriguing floral and subtly tart aftertaste, the tropical mangosteen is now becoming increasingly popular as the fruit of choice on European shores. Various parts of the plant have a history of use in traditional medicine, mostly in Southeast Asia; it may have been used to treat skin infections, wounds, dysentery, urinary tract infections, and gastrointestinal complaints, [3] [28] although there is no high-quality clinical evidence for any of these effects. Mangosteen trees contain a bitter latex that protects it from most insects or diseases. There are some common issues to watch for, however.
