About this deal

As a founding member of The UK Plastics Pact it is great to see continuous innovation by Unilever in their commitment to ensure all plastic packaging is reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025.

This announcement may contain forward-looking statements, including 'forward-looking statements' within the meaning of the United States Private Securities Litigation Reform Act of 1995. Our products are formulated to be safe to people and to the environement, and their safety is assured by a world-leading group of safety scientists at Unilever’s Safety and Environmental Assurance Centre (SEAC). Consumer goods company Unilever has launched Cif ecorefill, a concentrated cleaning product that can be diluted at home within a refillablespray bottle,to reduce plastic use.The ecorefills are 100% recyclable once the plastic sleeves are removed and, by the end of 2020, the ambition is for all Cif ecorefills and spray bottles to be made from 100% recycled plastic. Through its innovative technology, it seamlessly releases the super-concentrated product into the bottle, which is filled with water at home. Diluting the product at home means 97% less water is being transported, fewer trucks on the road and less greenhouse gas emissions.

They are small and light, so can be bought in bulk, and they take up less space in cupboards and recycling bins. However, we have a team of scientific experts at Unilever’s Safety and Environmental Assurance Centre (SEAC) who play a key role in ensuring that our products are safe and environmentally sustainable. To support an industry-wide shift towards reusable packaging at scale, we’ve carried out a review of all the learnings and insights gained through our pilots. The team uses its extensive knowledge of packaging, technology and material science to design and develop the most sustainable ways to get our products to consumers. Changing how we make, distribute, use and dispose of everyday products is one of the biggest environmental challenges the world is currently facing," said the company. ecorefill isn't harmful when used in the right way and, once diluted, is designed to be used as a spray. Cif ecorefills began life as a pilot in the UK in 2019 and we have now scaled them up across ten markets in Europe, Canada and Australia.

To fully understand the opportunities and challenges related to refill–reuse models, the team analysed all of our pilots.

In addition to this, a major environmental benefit is the reduction in the amount of product that is transported around the UK. In addition to this, the plan sees Unilever working collaboratively with partners to seek out solutions plus support and educate consumers on how they can reduce plastic consumption. That’s why we’re now focusing on developing our refill and reuse strategy while scaling up the common successes and synergies. We’ve found out vital learnings that need to be integrated in future innovation, such as the importance of clear bottles when consumers refill at home with a concentrate, so they can see the unique formulation working. Instead, a range of refill–reuse models need to be designed, developed and tailored to different consumer segments and geographies.

Should there be any skin irritation or, if the contents have been swallowed, seek immediate medical attention. Because these forward-looking statements involve risks and uncertainties, there are important factors that could cause actual results to differ materially from those expressed or implied by these forward-looking statements. Success depends on tailoring solutions accordingly, removing barriers to entry, and keeping systems as simple and affordable as possible. As such, they require significantly less plastic than traditional packs, and cut carbon emissions as less water is carried by trucks on roads. The easy-to-use refill bottle is made with 75% less plastic and by diluting at home means 97% less water is being transported, resulting in 87% fewer trucks on the road. ecorefill should only be used with the relevant kitchen or bathroom bottle as it has been specially designed for each bottle. This comes when UK demand for less plastic and more refillable and reusable solutions are on the rise, with 62% of people saying reuse is even more important to them than recycling. By adopting a ‘test, learn and refine’ mentality, we’re developing innovative solutions that will help people cut their use of plastic for good. Compact and light, the ecorefill costs less than an ordinary Cif spray bottle, and is currently available to purchase in supermarkets across the UK.
