About this deal

The heart of a mollusk has three (3) chambers. They consist of two auricles and a ventricle. The ventricles move blood from the aorta into the blood vessels while oxygenated blood flows through the auricles. Many mollusks are eaten as food: clams, oysters, scallops, mussels, squid (calamari) and land snails (escargot) The most universal features of the body structure of molluscs are a mantle with a significant body cavity used for breathing and excretion, and the organization of the nervous system. Many have a calcareous shell. [11] V kolikor je koža okoli kožnega moluska občutljiva, le-to zaščitite pred Molusk raztopino z nanosom negovalno zaščitne lipofilne kreme. The particles are sorted by yet another group of cilia, which send the smaller particles, mainly minerals, to the prostyle so eventually they are excreted, while the larger ones, mainly food, are sent to the stomach's cecum (a pouch with no other exit) to be digested. The sorting process is by no means perfect. [16] Morphological analyses tend to recover a conchiferan clade that receives less support from molecular analyses, [80] although these results also lead to unexpected paraphylies, for instance scattering the bivalves throughout all other mollusc groups. [81]

Mollusks reproduce sexually. Depending on the species, fertilization may be external or internal. There are even hermaphrodites, such as snails, with male and female gametes in them. All female mollusks produce eggs. While some have live births, others lay their eggs externally. The eggs may hatch into a smaller replica of their parents or a worm-like larva at first. There are also a few specimens from notable collectors Theodore Cantor, Charles Darwin, Revd F W Hope, G W Smith, J R le B Tomlin, W F R Weldon and J O Westwood.

Most molluscs have shells, but some groups do not: octopods, slugs, and the gastropods known as sea slugs. a b c d Chapman, A.D. (2009). Most mollusks are herbivores. However, some of them are filter feeders while others such as the cephalopods are predators. Unlike modern octopuses and squids, early cephalopod fossils had external shells and crawled on the seafloor. However, most of them did not make it past the Cretaceous Period. Mollusk — Habitat Opinions vary about the number of classes of molluscs; for example, the table below shows seven living classes, [19] and two extinct ones. Although they are unlikely to form a clade, some older works combine the Caudofoveata and Solenogasters into one class, the Aplacophora. [27] [15] :291–292 Two of the commonly recognized "classes" are known only from fossils. [17] Class Landing, E.; Geyer, G.; Bartowski, K.E. (2002). Periodically, circular muscles at the hindgut's entrance pinch off and excrete a piece of the prostyle, preventing the prostyle from growing too large. The anus, in the part of the mantle cavity, is swept by the outgoing "lane" of the current created by the gills. Carnivorous molluscs usually have simpler digestive systems. [16] The Museum's collections reflect this diversity: the mollusc collections are the second largest collection by group, with just under 80,000 specimens in the collection. The majority of the mollusc collections are dry specimens: shells, borings and other hard parts. The fluid-preserved collections were mostly acquired for use in teaching, as well as representing some of the soft-bodied forms. Additionally, there are many mollusc specimens in the microscope slide collections at the Museum. These collections have not been organised by animal group yet. The fossil mollusc material is held in the Museum's Palaeontology collections, and a few mollusc collections related to former curators are maintained at the Oxford University Museum of the History of Science. Although Fordilla and Pojetaia were classified as early bivalves, the more modern variants emerged around 488 to 443 million years ago (Ordovician Period). Rudists, a group of bivalve mollusks, were abundant during the Cretaceous (about 65 million years ago). But they disappeared after the period’s major extinction event. Tyrian purple, made from the ink glands of murex shells, "fetched its weight in silver" in the fourth century BC, according to Theopompus. [90] The discovery of large numbers of Murex shells on Crete suggests the Minoans may have pioneered the extraction of "imperial purple" during the Middle Minoan period in the 20th–18th centuries BC, centuries before the Tyrians. [91] [92] Sea silk is a fine, rare, and valuable fabric produced from the long silky threads ( byssus) secreted by several bivalve molluscs, particularly Pinna nobilis, to attach themselves to the sea bed. [93] Procopius, writing on the Persian wars circa 550 CE, "stated that the five hereditary satraps (governors) of Armenia who received their insignia from the Roman Emperor were given chlamys (or cloaks) made from lana pinna. Apparently, only the ruling classes were allowed to wear these chlamys." [94] a b c d Giribet, G.; Okusu, A.; Lindgren, A.R.; Huff, S.W.; Schrödl, M.; Nishiguchi, M.K. (May 2006).
