About this deal

These soft shell crabs are prime meals for many species of fish and are excellent bait when they can be found Most often however, the best method for using blue crabs for bait is to separate the hard shell from the meaty body by pulling them apart then cutting the body in half or quarters. Is hooking mud crabs illegal in Qld? Semi-circle hooks, as you might expect, are half way towards being a circle hook. The primary benefit is the same as that of a circle hook – more fish are hooked in the lip and less are deep hooked. This makes them better for catch and release fishing. But the difference is semi-circle hooks can be used more easily with worm baits for species like bream. The choice of hook should be based on the size and type of bait being used and the weight of fish hunted. Beware using a small hook in a large bait because the bait will mask the all-important hook point. Useful for anglers that are not using worm baits and perhaps prefer not to use baiting elastic to hold baits to the hook. Mustad Baitholder Hooks, available here

These are popular hooks and could be used for shore fishing for conger or rays as well as general deep sea boat fishing. Renowned hook manufacturers like Mustad produce their own patterns, such as the Viking hook, originally designed for boat fishing but now popular among shore anglers due to its strength and durability. Other brands, like Kamasan, offer their versions of classic designs, like the Kamasan B940 Aberdeen hook, a widely used all-round hook by British Anglers. Q: What rules and regulations apply when catching Mud Crabs? A: Queensland law states you are allowed four pots per person, and 10 male crabs PER PERSON IN POSSESSION. It is NOT 10 crabs per day. ( it’s illegal to take female crabs in Queensland ). What fish eats Blue Crabs?

A lightweight, small eyed, fine wire Aberdeen best suited to worm baits used in catch and release match fishing. Available in 2, 1, 1/0-2/0. The key feature of a beaked or octopus hook is the turned up or ‘offset’ eye. This means that when snelling hooks to your line, the hook point stays perfectly parallel to your line. Snelling is when you tie on a hook to your line by wrapping your line around the shank of the hook, rather than tying a knot. You can also just push your line through the top eyelet, then secure the line to the shank of the hook with some thin silicon tubing. Some people won’t attach the top hook on a pennel rig at all and it will be free running on the line. A small eyed, lightweight, sharp, fine-wire Aberdeen, with a heavily-forged shank and bend. A pattern especially favoured for baiting with mud ragworms etc using a baiting needle. Again, the boxes clip together to form a unit. If you are not sure, then break off a crab’s leg segment because the softer flesh underneath will be perfectly formed and solid but still soft.; this crab is the perfect hook bait. Jig hooks are strong given how fine they are. They can be designed to increase the movement of the jig. It’s important to file or crush down the barb if you plan on releasing your catch when using jig hooks. Sometimes you need to replace the hooks on old casting jigs, which is probably the only time you’d buy these hooks.

Do turkey necks work for crabbing?

Favoured for easy baiting with worms and sandeels because the long shank makes threading the hook easier and the small eye passes through the flesh causing minimum damage. Kahle hooks have super wide gapes for rigging big baits. They could be useful if you want a longer shank than you get with a circle hook but you still want a super wide gape so you can rig larger crab or fish baits. These aren’t popular amongst UK sea anglers and are more popular abroad in the US surf casting scene for big fish. Small hooks catch more fish, but big hooks hold larger fish better. The choice on size is yours, but you can improve the odds by using the strongest patterns. Blues and match patterns are not for big fish.Using a whole crab retains a lot of fish-attracting juices so you will have to release them by piercing the bait with a pointed knife to allow the scent to leach out slowly.
